Saw this production at Sadlers Wells. We are fans of this company but they still desperately need more dancers. Gatsby ballet suffered from too few dancers on stage. You never got any of the 'crowd or party' scenes. Also, some key sections were skimped over. Shame as the story could work really well in this format.

I saw The Northern Ballet perform at The Grand, Leeds, before a UK tour of a Global premiere show [http://northernballet.com/index.php?q=the-great-gatsby], and The Great Gatsby was a revelation. Firstly, shows are 2 1/2 hours long, including intermission; make sure to get an early dinner. Secondly, Northern Ballet blended classical ballet with modern dancing to dramatically interpret the Flapper era classic from F. Scott Fitzgerald. I was pleasantly surprised at how accessible the dancing was, and how much of the story could be conveyed through body movements and music. The jazzy Flapper parties included a bit of a sing along, even, yet it all worked well and moved apace. Finally, you do not need to be a ballet fan, just enjoy dance, to enjoy the work of Northern Ballet.

Have seen several productions. Most recent The Nutcracker. Favourite is still Wuthering Heights which kept me engrossed from start to finish. Looking forward to next production.

Not being a ballet lover, I treated my wife to a production, as I know she loves ballet. I was blown away, the story was fantastic and the dancing was " out of this world ". I was very impressed and will not hesitate to go to the Northern Ballet's future production.

- the other is Opera North. Viewed on an open day, their new building in what is becoming Leeds' cultural quarter next to the West Yorkshire Playhouse is stunning. A fan since the 1980's staging of "A Simple Man' toured to Wimbledon, their work staged at The Grand and Nationally, if not innovative, is routinely sublime.
