Create was recommended by a friend, who was not wrong. The food on this first visit (surely not the last) was excellent. All of us had as a starter either 'venison in various ways' or shrimp fritters or scallops with 'English chorizo'. If I had to pick a winner it'd be the venison (which I hadn't chosen), but everyone was enthusiastic. Mains: people went for fish pie (good), pheasant breast (rave review) or salted ling poached in a seafood broth (different, delicious, really good work by the chef). Dessert: the chestnut cake with a chestnut sorbet was unusual and brilliant. Wine was OK (quality, value), there was an excellent choice of beers (our beer drinker chose well) and the only little letdown which needs to be improved was the espresso, which tasted hob-stewed.
Very good value - you pay as much or more at some pubs with only a fraction of this quality. We went for a late lunch, and finished mid-afternoon. Only then did we realise they closed from 2.30 to 5.00. So that was why the place had gone quiet! They never told us, and later they said they had plenty of other things to be getting on with while we were enjoying. What nice people! What a change to be made really welcome instead of being served by self-important waiters (you know the sort?), and how marvellous to find a really original menu which was very well focused - enough choice but not too much. Great cooking.
