“More Than Just History”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

Many people today would not realise that Leeds was once a place that was known for its engineering. The Middleton Railway rightly claims to be the oldest continuously running railway in the world and its right here in Leeds. OK its not the National Railway Museum but thats a national museum this is a smaller place run by volunteers.
Steam powered locomotives on rail services are but a distant memory for older people today but here in Middleton, Leeds you can see working engines and even ride on a steam train. This is a small part of the history of the industrial revolution but unlike many museums you can actually touch the locos and talk to people who drive and maintain them.

“Not chocolate box pretty but worth the effort to visit”
Reviewed June 25, 2012

This railway is short and doesn't have pretty scenery, but it is gritty and real. There is an excellent display of industrial and railway history. Anyone who is interested in learning about a recently passed era should not miss this experience. I appreciated the railway laying on a free bus service from the station for those attending the gala last weekend and which included a guided tour of old engineering works on the way; the railway is quite hard to find otherwise. The facilities for visitors are well organised.
