“Industrial”
Reviewed May 8, 2011

This is not a pretty railway, it used to carry only coal. It gives a feel for the past when muck, sweat and hard work were the norm.
Run entirely by volunteers for the past 50 years this is well worth a visit. The train ride lasts around 25 minutes return and the whole site is an accredited museum with some very interesting exhibits and information.

“Industrial heritage alive today!”
Reviewed February 1, 2011

The oldest working railway in the world. A modern museum with an operational railway at it's heart. If you wish to re-live the industrial past, you will love this. Not on the pretty side of Leeds, this is how it has been for the past 250+ years. Go, experience, enjoy, be wiser after the event!!

“OK but not that exciting”
Reviewed July 6, 2010

The museum itself is full of different engines with information about them. You can walk inside some of them. The history of the railway is quite interesting, being associated with the industrial revolution.

A train ride is available, which the kids really enjoyed. However the railway itself is very short and the ride is over in 5 minutes. The ride takes you up to Middleton woods. On the day we went it was raining so had no choice but to go back.

However the main drawback of this is the short railway which means you are not on the train for very long and the scenary is not picturesque in the slightest. Some other steam railways, e.g. North Yorks railways are more exciting due to the length of journey, scenary and quality of destinations.
