“Ignore Previous reviews the place is Great !”
Reviewed May 17, 2007

having read the previous reviews we were a little worried about staying here, however we mailed the manager and he replied very quickly and assured us all was good. On arrival we had been allocated a fantastic room, large, clean, modern, quiet all you could ask for really. The hotel location is perfect for exploring leeds. Thought the hotel lobby was impressive so not sure what the previous comments refer to. We were lucky enough to get a free breakfast upgrade which was probably the best we have ever had anywhere. Overall first class (at least 4 star), great place, and really friendly staff. Only thing we didnt like was the bar was very nice but v v smokey even though it had a non-smoking area although that will be sorted come July 1st. Top Hotel !

This year I decided to take my boyfriend away for a romantic Valentines night away. I have always heard good things about the malmaison chain from a friend and so picked this hotel as the choice to stay at.
On arrival I was slightly disappointed by the small size of the rooms and the rowdy group of men in the bar area. Generally though the hotel was very comfortable. We set of to explore Leeds which is a lovely city and has excellent shops, restaurants and bars.
On return to our room we decided we would maybe settle in and make use of the DVD player. An excellent faclity - but not working. We rang down to reception to have this fixed and were told that someone would be up immediately. Half an hour later and a second call and someone did actually come up this time. The problem was fixed and we watched our film.
We were then kept up for the majority of the night by a rowdy stag do on the same floor. We were near the lifts so we heard all comings and goings throughout the night as well as doors slamming and general shouting up and down the corridors. Not something you expect from an expensive boutique hotel.
We had booked to have our breakfast in bed to round off our romantic weekend. Unfortunately, no hot breakfast is available in the rooms so we settled for the continental cold breakfast and booked it for 9. By 9.30 we had not received our breakfasts, on a chance glance around the corridor we noticed 2 breakfasts sat outside the room next door. A call down to reception and we were told someone would look into it. 5 minutes later we received a call saying our breakfasts had arrived. I asked the lady to wait while I confirmed this and she just hung up! The lady who 'delivered' our breakfasts in fact just moved them from in front of the neighbours door.
Any one of these disappointments could have been forgiven, but together with the general ineptitude of the staff led me to fill in a comments card with my complaints. This was handed in to reception on check out.
I never received any response or apology to my feedback. Then to add insult to injury, a few days later I received a general mailer postcard from malmaison 'looking forward to our next stay'. I think not!!!

My friend and I decided on a wee trip away and fancied Leeds as our destination - our hotel of choice was the Malmaison. We were both in agreement the location of this hotel is super - arriving from Edinburgh by train we were impressed the hotel which was a mere 5 minute walk away. My friend and i were both first timers to Leeds and having spent 3 and half hours on an non air conditioned train we were eager to check in and explore the city.
We checked in slightly surprised by the shabbiness of the reception area, the decor was a bit rough around the edges however the reception staff were distracting enough to avert attention to detail for a moment. As we were checking in I found i was consumed by the smell of cigarette smoke; (perhaps we are spoilt with the smoking ban in Scotland) the air was unbelievably smokey and the stench of stale cigar smoke was pretty overwhelming.
As our room was not ready we were given the option to leave our bags by the recepionist - reluctanly we did. Not the most secure room and spying there was an identical bag to my friends sitting on the shelve we envisaged the worst happening. However it was ok and after a lovley afternoon exploring Leeds excellent shops we returned to the hotel. We booked a twin however same old! we got a double - rather embarrasing telling a busy reception but we got this sorted out eventually and stayed in the room whilst two staff members efficiently changed the bed. Products amazing - not so sure about the breath freshner but generous sized bottles of showergel and body lotion.
In the evening we decided to have a light snack before heading out and was served by a waitress who was extremeley attentive and allowed us to eat in the less informal part of the bar/restaurant area. Food ok. Reasonably priced.
If you decide to stay here i would make a request with reception not to stay on the first floor - i had a sleepless night due to noise from downstairs in the lobby at 3:30am. Not happy but managed somehow to get back to sleep (really comfy bed helps).
In terms of value for money i would say good. Staff helpful and friendly. Location suprisingly good. However I just feel Leeds Malmaison is lacking a bit of style compared to its counterparts perhaps a bit of redecoration is required!!

Overall we had a very good time at the Mal. In order to live up to it's slick and clever marketing however, a few things need tightening up. Dinner in the Brasserie was just ok, expensive for what you get, and the service was decidedly patchy, there seemed to be a lot of staff milling about but only one who actually did anything constructive. It is a lovely setting though, if you ignore the lights which turned themselves off and on!.

Our room was very nice, comfy bed and light and spacious. The bath has the quickest running water i have ever seen, it filled up in about 60 seconds!. My only gripe about the room is that it was'nt as clean as it could have been. We discovered the previous occupant's sock which had been missed, and the bath room was a bit ropey in places.

I would not hesitate to go again however ,as it is well situated and parking is safe and convienient. You might also spot a few famous faces there as well!.

Stayed here for a Saturday night on the journey up to Edinburgh. Welcoming staff and a nice room, but it certainly is showing signs of wear and tear. The bar in the basement was great but service very slow. Breakfast next morning - no complaints, but the staff got our order wrong, despite us being the only ones in the restaurant. The rate of £109 was OK for the good location and fantastically comfy beds, but there was certainly room for improvement

We stayed at the Leeds Malmaison at the beginning of Feb - we were given a a Malmaisson voucher as a wedding present from a very generous and wonderful best man.

The hotel is in a great location and is nice BUT silly things let it down.

The carpet in the reception area is badly stained - the glass window on the disabled lift is filthy and looks as though it has never been cleaned - dirty ashtrays, glasses and coffee cups in the recpetion and as we got out of the lift - not that great a first impression.

Also didn't like the fact that they immediatly debit £100 from your switch card "in case" you decide to have room service or want to order drinks - if you don't use it they credit it back - not that trusting for a high class establishment.

The room was nice - but a lot of scuff marks on the wall and raw plugs showing in the tiling of the bathroom - silly things but they really let the place down - especially when it sells itself as a high calibre hotel.

They state on the website they encourage you to take the fabulous toiletries in the room - but have never seen such paltry amount to theive!!

We loved leeds - had a great meals in Loch Fyne and Mr Wasabi Japanese - and a great night in Flares

We brunched at the Mal on Sunday morning which was lovely - odd menu but can highly recommend the panckes with blueberries, bacon and maple syrup and then the strips of beef - but found the manager explaining he had a shortage of menus very odd!!!

Maybe I just don't get the "Mal way of life" !!!

I don't think it is worth the money they charge but recommend Leeds as a fab place for a weekend.

Would give a Mal hotel another chance but think they trade more their "name" than they do on the quality of their hotels

We booked the Depot Suit for one night as a treat to ourselves! We had a great time. The room was lovely especially the bathroom with a HUGE sunken bath and monsoon shower. Candles were placed around the bath which was a nice touch.

The bed was also huge it was lovely and comfy, we had a great nights sleep.

I belive there is also free internet conection if this interests you.

Just a couple of minor points to note: the sofa is situated in a strange place in comparison to the location of the TV i.e. the postion of the sofa is not in front of the TV, more to one side which makes the viewing angel akward and the IPOD docking station does not connect to the suround sound system which is a shame (netiher does the TV only CDS and DVDS!).

We also visited the bar, the staff were very polite and the service was great. Just a little word of warning, the cocktails are V expensive (£17 for 2) and not worth that price at all! Stick to sprints or pints! Please don't let this put you off visiting the bar though, it has a lovely relacing atmosphere.

Another thing to note- we were able to check in to the room a little early as it was ready, however one of the housekeepers walked in to the room, obviously not knowing we had been checked in. If you are lucky enought to check in early, make sure you put the do not distrube sign on the door!

As mentioned these are minor points and it is a lovely room, we had a great stay, so much so that we are going back next month!
