“Gorgeous hotel!”
Reviewed February 20, 2008

We booked a King Executive room and on arrival were told we had been upgraded to a junior suite, which was totally unexpected. The receptionist was very polite and friendly and offered us a welcome glass of wine. A very nice porter took us up to our room which was gorgeous! It had a bedroom and a living room and a big bathroom, it was all very clean and cosy too, didn't see any signs of it needing refurbishment. All the staff that we dealt with were really lovely, we would definitely stay here again. Bit expensive but worth it for a special romantic stay.

  • Liked — It was very luxurious.
  • Disliked — Nothing really...

42 The Calls is less than 10 minutes walk from the excitement of Leeds city centre but at the same time in a peaceful location.

It’s a town-house-hotel overlooking the river, converted from a corn mill in 1991 and a member of the Design Hotels group.

The rooms are quirky, warm and well furnished with personal touches. A standard double has multi-channel TV (Freeview channels), Internet access, DVD and CD player and costs around £89 per night (without breakfast which is £14).

There is a good welcoming service and helpful staff.

Not wheelchair friendly.
Valet parking is available for £10.75 overnight.
Didn’t eat here.
Would I go back? Definitely – it’s an award winning hotel with good reason.

We visited 42 for two nights in October half term - one double and one twin which were next to each other. Both rooms were reasonably furnished (in common with other comments a refurbishment is probably due as carpet a bit stained and curtains not exactly luxurious, but the beds were comfortable and bed linen was in good condition. The bathrooms were well equipped with Molten Brown toiletries and superbly soft towels / robes but tiles and grouting are beginning to look their age). Our rooms were both 'deluxe' which is perhaps stretching it a bit and if we were to stay again we'd opt for a room overlooking the canal as this would reduce the city noise levels. At weekends you can street park at virtually no cost directly outside the hotel door. The breakfasts are absolutely delicious, and an honesty bar in the small sitting area appears to work well (not exactly an honesty bar as a camera constantly zooms in on you!). Service by the staff at breakfast and reception is second to none. Once home the hotel had the decency to ring and asked if we had consumed a bottle of champagne and not paid (we hadn't!), which was a nice touch I thought. Would probably not stay again but only because there are too many hotels in the world to explore!

Booked this hotel to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. Room classed as deluxe but very small. Found correspondence left by previous guests up to 2 weeks old. Hospitality tray was stained and cafetiere had not been cleaned from previous guest.
we complained to the hotel but they ere just not interested.

We had a one night stay, arrived Saturday, car was taken away to be parked and promptly returned prior to our departure. We paid only for the standard NCP fee. This was a good service.

We were earlier than standard check-in time but were welcomed and shown to our standard room which was satisfactory. I agree with what some others say about there being faults and maybe needing a facelift but I have never been to a hotel where you can't find some fault with the decor. What I did like about the room was that it wasn't the standard chain hotel layout and size. The room was at the front of the hotel and faced the main thoroughfare as it was a warm night the window was open (no ac) and it was a little noisy.

The staff were pleasant and very helpful.

Restaurants: We went to the little fish restaurant opposite the hotel at lunch time; we were ignored for ten minutes and then left (other customers seemed to be having a similar experience). Instead we had a sandwich at the Townhouse which was ok. Saturday evening we ate at the Loch Fyne Restaurant which was good if you like fish.

Overall I would recommend the hotel, although I have been in better I have been in many an awful lot worse.

We paid about £100 for a double room excluding parking and breakfast.

I booked into this hotel on the basis that it was supposed to be the original and best boutique hotel in Leeds - all I can say is that it doesn't live up to the billing.

My first impression is that the staff are a bit of a mixed bag - they range from extremely friendly and helpful to sullen.

The accomodation initially looks great, and you can't help but love the location right on the canal. However, look more closely and things aren't really up to scratch. Like a previous review the carpet in my room had seen better days - it looked very tired and was stained in numerous places. The finish of the paintwork was poor and the desk was about ready to go in the skip. In the bathroom there was a nasty stale smell that turned out to be the shower curtain - it was a beautiful white at the top but a rather uninspiring pink/brown colour at the bottom. The curtains were all on pull cords - unfortunately of the three in the room none of them actually worked, and the curtains themselves were badly faded and shabby.

All in all I can imagine that when this hotel was new it would have been wonderful, but unfortunately it's now in need of a major refit.

Fortunately having been on business it wasn't my own cash the paid for the room, but if I had just paid over £140 of my own money I would have been livid.

Having stayed in the Leeds Malmaison the previous evening there is simply no comparrison!!!! Do yourself a favour and stay there instead.

This hotel is disgusting. The first thing, was that there was trash on the floor in the entry way, a long piece of plastic string and some chocolate bits. Perhaps the cleaner was dragging the bin out of the room carelessly? The carpet is gross, with spots all over. The bathtub was not cleaned. There was dust all over and dead bugs on the windowsill. The bathrobe had a hair in it. Another one was brought to me, and that one also had a hair in it. Extremely offputting.

The staff didn't really seem to think anything was wrong with these things. I was offered a suite to look at, which was even dirtier. That carpet had tomato sauce (looking pretty fresh) on the floor, the door between living room and bedroom had coffee splashes, and the bench on the windowsill in that room had been slimed in the past--looked like ryanaiir seats.
