“Excellent Sunday lunch menu”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

This is the third time we have visited the Deer Park, and for the first time we were seated to the right of the eneterance - which strangely has a completely different decor and feel to the left! However, the menu is the same and the lunch Sunday lunch has a wide choice, including traditional roasts as well as the full a la carte menu being on offer. We went for a family meal out with ages ranging from 76 to 17 and there was lots of choice for everyone. The food is well presented, tasty and good value - especially the set Sunday lunch menu. The service was good and the Deer Park is always busy with a good atmosphere. I had the hoisin duck salad from the main menu, it is delicious, warm duck, lots of salad and a lovely hoisin sauce. Two of the family had the roast pork from the Sunday lunch, it was cooked really well, although the crackling was a little hard, but overall it was excellent value. Traditional puddings include a sticky toffee and a cruble and custard and there are less traditional choices too. We will be returning.

“Dear and Disappointing”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

Have eaten a number of times at the Deer Park and although a bit on the dear side for a pub, the food has always been good. Restaurant was reasonably busy around 7pm on Thursday and had welcoming log fires burning. Table was quickly found and our order taken. Complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar was a nice touch and good. My friend had seafood risotto which was creamy and enjoyable. My rump steak was cooked rare just as I'd ordered but was probably 20%gristle making it tough to cut and difficult to eat. I would have preferred a smaller, properly trimmed steak. The chili salsa covering it was overpowering and would have been better served on the side. The accompanying leaves were already drizzled with oil - no choice of dressing. Service was good but when the bill arrived, I discovered my guest's one large glass of pinot grigio cost a whopping £7.15! The menu only shows by-the-glass prices for the 175ml size. Overall, it's still a nice place to eat but next time I'll skip the steak and check the wine prices!

“Mother's Day Disappointment”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

My quest or a decent Sunday Roast in the Roundhay area continues. I remember the Deer Park as a fairly innocuous roadhouse pub but the transformation into a restaurant looked promising. Booked a table for an early evening slot on perhaps the busiest day of the year but was assured that all the menu options would still be available despite the appetites of the legions of mothers for roast dinners- the food will have been ordered in.
Arrived at 7.05 with two kids and two generations of mothers. Told that table not yet ready, buy a drink at the bar. There ensued a period of 10 minutes standing around, same treatment as we got at the Fox down the road last year. Eventually seated in the west facing wing of the building, nice ambience here with brushed aluminium table tops and utilitarian light fittings. Left without service for a further 10 minutes, eventually a young Polish waitress took our drink orders. We felt the need to cash in at this point in fear of being left unattended even longer and put the whole food order in at the same time. Roast beef was off. Somehow I wasn't surprised. The explanation was that it had run out during the day. So far, so predictable.
Food arrived fairly rapidly, good quality roast pork and lamb dishes piled high in the modern style. Veg served separately and plenty of it. Nice roasties, Yorks pudding and a red cabbage reduction all topped with a tasty gravy. Mint sauce had run out but young male waiter located an untouched one on a table somewhere so we had that. Third employee of the evening came to take the dessert order. Kids ice cream with cookies was fine (difficult to mess this up really) but our two creme brulees with caramelised pear were a disaster. Patchy sugar crust gave way to what tasted suspiciously like a processed shop bought custard and two shrivelled pears with the consistency of lead shot. We couldn't finish these and asked for a refund on the final bill which was willingly given. But the damage had been done to our whole experience.
So in summary, good main courses were let down by poor desserts and inconsistent service all of which means we won't be rushing back.Worth pointing out that this is by no means a cheap option and you may want to consider The Mansion as an only slighty more expensive alternative.

“Excellent lunch”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I was initially a bit apprehensive as we arrived at The Deer Park for lunch. It is certainly spacious and the open fires very welcoming with the winter weather, but I was wondering if it might be one of those establishments that focus rather too hard on trendy ambience rather than the quality of the food.
Thankfully, my fears were completely unfounded. My Gammon, Egg and Frites was absolutely spot-on: good quality meat, properly cooked, perfect crisp fries, all nicely presented on a hot plate. Everyone else seemed to really enjoy their meal too. Wine and coffee were both good.
Staff were polite and friendly. A minor criticism was that our lunch did take a fair while to arrive, but it was worth the wait.
I'd certainly visit The Deer Park again.
