“Hercule Poirot at the Queens”
Reviewed January 17, 2008

Really lovely Art Deco hotel right by the train station in Leeds. My first time in this city so a really convenient location to explore the old Victorian Quarter and the new.

My room was splendidy decorated in Deco style (the phone photo doesn't really do it justice) and I kept thinking I'd bump into Christie's Poirot in the Bar to discuss the latest who-dunnit! A great place for a murder-mystery weekend and shopping - although my visit was strictly business.

I'm giving this hotel 4 stars due to some very minor dusting problems in the room - which Hercule would not have approved of, but would certainly have complained about at the time. Alas, I am too timid..!

However, I had the most beautiful stay in Leeds - even if it was on business - and a large part of that was down to this very comfortable hotel and its location.

stayed in the queens in leeds on 3rd jan 2008 had booked my self and my friend in for two nights 3 and 4 th jan 08 . my friend graduaded there in 2005 and we were back to buy clothes for her wedding in march 2008. had been snowing in leeds and entered hotel at 3pm it was cold. went up to room at approx 7pm as had been shopping left heating on at 32 degrees the hottest setting at approx 3pm but when came back room was really cold the heating was not working, rang house keeping twice got a little plug in heater and extra blankets but we could not sleep with the cold. we missed breakfast, which we were charged for, complained bitterly at reception but still had to pay 76 sterling inc breakfast it was a rip off went and stayed in marriott hotel which was just 65 sterling and was brilliant so warm and cosy and they could not do enough for us. would recommend the marriott and definately not the queens which was a four star hotel!

I recently stayed at the Queens Hotel along with work colleagues as a treat to coincide with our work Christmas meal.

The receptionist was very friendly, although we had a delay checking in as our MD was not on the list, however they managed to sort the problem out with little fuss.

The room was huge, with a brilliant bed, and the usual tea/coffee making facilities, TV (with some satellite channels) and a great bathroom which was bright and clean.

The view was brilliant as well, overlooking the hustle and bustle of City Square and the wonderful Christmas tree in its full glory. All this was only inches away but the room made you feel as if you were in your own little world.

The staff were friendly and the breakfast was nice with lots of choice. I am only disappointed that we were not there for longer (checked in at 4.30pm, out again at 6.15, then a few hours sleep before setting off for work). However, I was relatively sober (despite lots of free drink) so was able to appreciate it the next morning after a good, comfortable night's sleep.

On the face of it this is a good hotel. Great location, recently being refurbished, imposing and grand building.

However, Although my room was nice, Other rooms of people in our party were questionable. There was no comment card in the room which I think tells the story of the hotel. Generally the staff seem impersonal, robotic and not bothered.

The hotel calls itself deluxe 4 star however it is falling short.

Some general coments:
Cheap toiletries; No slippers, sheet and blanket on bed instead of duvet (cold!); no turn down service; no price list for mini bar; They charge lots for everything - I asked for fruit in my room - small plate of sliced fruit - £8.

Good refurbished room; check out was friendly (which was the exeption) good breakfast although in an underground restaurant;

I would consider staying here again for the right price. This hotel could be brilliant - It just needs to cheer up and get its act together.

The location is fantastic, right next to the station and facing City Square, the breakfast however was poor, It took a while to be served toast and hot drinks to the point where you wished it was self service like the rest of it. Cooked food didn't look or taste that great, the juice and cereal tasted like it was from the lower end of supermarket own brands and the danish pastries looked okay but were a bit stale to eat.

Thankfully the breakfast had been paid for by someone else but if you ever consider paying the £15 (each before service charge!) then may i suggest taking advantage of that great location and going out for breakfast where you could both have a much better breakfast for a fraction of the £30 for two charge.

We stayed in this hotel at the weekend. The room,on the seventh floor, was freezing and we had no hot water for the entire stay. When we reported the fault they informed us that the whole hotel was affected. This was untrue as we had friends staying on other floors who did not experience the same problems. The only people who seem to have been affected were on the 7th and 8th floors.
Our weekend ,which we had been looking forward to, was ruined and we would certainly not recommend this hotel, especially if you are on the top floors.
