“Little known West Yorkshire gem of a museum”
Reviewed August 5, 2014

This recently refurbished ex-family home of the industrialist Butterfield family is well worth a couple of hours - even more in Summer when you can wander round the extensive grounds. A great mixture of fine art, local history, geological exhibits, traditional Victorian stuffed birds and animals [not my favourite!] and the luxurious life of the Butterfields. 2 issues - the car park is not only small, but very badly laid out; and the cafe is privately run, and wasn't open on the fine midsummer day in the school holidays when we visited. Both museum and car park are free.

“Very good Museum and Open Space”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

Dropped by today to take a look at where the Silver Roman Coins i found will end up and was very surprised to see a very nice museum with plenty of interesting exhibitions.
On a summers day the grounds are also very nice with lots of interesting colours in the garden.

My only complaint would be the very small car park with the parking spaces too close together - it's an accident waiting to happen.

“Good museum awful cafe”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

We were impressed with the displays and history info in the museum... Free to enter. Gardens big with playground, aviary, rabbit and Guinea pigs and a cacti house and good views. (and a bandstand with a live group on when we went) .
It isn't a real castle, but a mansion converted to a 'castle' appearance by a Victorian. Then went into disrepair over the years and finally altered to make the museum and gallery it is today.

Thought we would round the visit off with a coffee and cake in their cafe. Wish we hadn't bothered. Not a very clean cafe. Only a choice of a few scones, pastries and muffins. The scone was dry and probably days old , my husband ate it because he had paid for it ) and the stand of crisps were all out of date so I ended up with just a coffee.

I would go back to the museum but give the cafe a wide berth.
