“Lovely Garden and gorgeous house”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

Its a favorite of mine in honesty. The house has strong Bronte connections but the Taylor family who owned it are fascinating. The 1830's garden is delightful and you can now get a cup of tea or coffee which is great.

“Small but perfectly formed!”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

We got there late one Sunday afternoon after visiting the nearby Oakwell Hall and were greeted by staff who were very helpful - pointing out that the separate exhibition space closed before the house and so advising we went there first. The exhibition was based on the novel "Shirley" with the Bronte connection to the house and exploring history of the luddites. Once back at the house we were provided with a written guide and left to explore the house laid out as it would have been in the 1830s,it is not big but very well laid out with lots of interest Whilst we were there they were running a children's activity and placed one modern item in each of the rooms - we had great fun spotting these, not as easy as it seemed!
A very good gift shop with interesting selection of relevant books together with period style childrens toys. The only things missing was refreshment facilities and possibly seating in the charming garden area.
PS I have no idea where that header picture with the dove cote is but is not Red House Museum!!

“nice surprise”
Reviewed March 5, 2012

we came across the red house because we took a wrong turning to tong garden centre. saw the notices at the side of the roads and wondered what it was. when we came to it we were pleasantly surprised. not a too big a house but interesting. can walk around it looking into the rooms.staff were nice.a quite small garden but very nice and tranquil. a playground was very near.think there is a cafe sometimes open near another exhibition building but we didnt have time to go in. there was information about a past occupier which my friends found interesting. We enjoyed exploring the house and it was a nice surprise to find it. there was no charge only a voluntary fee which made it extra special.

“a lovely house”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

well worth a visit - a lovely house structurally, furnished in the style of the last family to live there. Some interesting history of Mary Taylor and Charlotte Bronte too.
