“Nice old railway hotel”
Reviewed September 14, 2008

This was a really nice old railway hotel. If you get the chance, walk the route between the car park and reception to see the old wooden-floored loading shoot.

The staff were all friendly, and the rooms average. Being an old hotel it is hard to keep modern and fresh, so there is a bit of peeling paint here and there. But if you can look past this it is a nice grand hotel.

Check in was quick, breaksfast was served nicely. Checkout was a bit slow as there was a queue in front.

Since my Yorkshire childhood I have always wanted to stay in the grandest hotel in Bradford, The Midland and a family wedding gave us the excuse. Okay, like the railway which spawned this hotel, it's golden age is long past, but it still reminds one of what a great place this must have been, and a wonderful bit is still left in the old station entrance which now leads to/from the car park. It is wonderfully old fashioned and even if the rooms are little shabby they are clean and big with grand sash-windows even if the view is of yet another everlasting development on it's doorstep which the hotel will once again outlast! The cheerful staff are happy in their work and attentive, working at the Midland still carries kudos in Bradford! There is a fantastic history to the place and we loved going down the grand staircases to the restaurant. At £150 for 3 nights for a twin with breakfast, through Superbreak, we got a bargain. We had dinner Friday night, £37.90 for 2x3 courses was a bargain for the superb cooking, no fancy food, just good honest fayre, perfectly cooked and presented, great chef here. We didn't have wine, a carafe of soft pennine tap-water is treat enough for us London dwellers! Breakfast was good, fine selection of fresh fruit, and the staff and service perfect. There are not many reasons to visit Bradford but this hotel is one of them! Check out their Xmas offers, they look a bargain if our stay is anything to go by. Oh, the fire alarm did go off briefly at 5am Sunday morning, but a quick call to reception soon put our minds at rest and we were back asleep in 5 minutes!

  • Liked — The old-fashioned splendour and excellent staff service, nearness to railway station.
  • Disliked — It's surroundings, but that's Bradford's fault.

I have stayed here a few times with work, the entrance is deceptively grande; sometimes you are welcomed with a glass of wine while siginig in. However, some of the bedrooms are very outdated, the last time i stayed i noticed many were being upgraded. I was put in an upgraded room, the only thing that seemed to be different was the door entry system, and new soft furnishings. Some rooms are huge, but i have not come across any I would class as small. Depending on what side of the building you are on, it will afffect the temperature of your room, no matter what you have the heating set on. I have stayed in some rooms that cannot get warm, and others that are too hot.

The staff are always polite and friendly.

Breakfasts are very nice though, custom made for each person, so it is cooked just how you like.

This hotel has seen better days, although the staff were pleasant and helpful. The public areas are quite grand but the bedrooms are in desparate need of an upgrade. Those at the front are rather noisy as there is a busy road below and they need redecorating and upgrading. My wardrobe was like sometihng from a functional travel lodge only more ancient - no door. Furniture was outdated and tatty. Breakfast was okay but had better although evening meals were fine. If I return would try to stay elsewhere.

From the exterior, it looked very nice. Even the reception area was interesting. Staff at the front desk were polite, but no more than they had to be. The real let down was when I got to the room, which was in the old section. No mention was made of this at the front desk
- apparently you have to pay £20 more per night to get one of their re-furbished rooms. Anyway, the old room was simply awful. Wallpaper peeling from the walls, half the lights not working and a terrible 1960's decor. The new rooms may be good, but I've not experienced them. Room service was dreadful too - breakfast delivered at 7am when I ordered it for 9am!! Do not stay here.

The Midland Hotel Bradford is one of the original Midland Railway Company hotels. The Midland and its hotels had an unmatched reputation for opulence. Much of this is preserved in the Midland Bradford today in the fine lobby, residents bar, staircase, mezzanine level and function rooms. For this reason the hotel is popular for weddings, with couples often having their photographs taken in the building.

In addition to this the excellent “Spirit of Bradford” bar offers a good pub like atmosphere and has a marvellous mural of the city across one wall. A regular feature is the trad jazz band on a Friday evening.

The bedrooms are practical rather than special. Our mattress was a little old. The bathroom once again was practical but nothing special. I have previously stayed in the hotel in renovated bedrooms with upgraded bathrooms. These are of a very high quality. Hopefully this will spread to the remainder of the hotel.

Breakfast are of the typical buffet type with the normal selection of hot and cold. We did not eat our evening meals in the hotel as we chose to eat in the wonderful Indian restaurants nearby. So I cannot comment on the food.

I arrived at Bradford interchange and jumped into a taxi and asked the driver to take me to the Midland where I was attending a work seminar. The driver politely refused to take me, pointing out that it was only a five minute walk from the station, which indeed it was.

The Midland is a grand building hidden away in a forest of grand buildings, but from the moment you step foot through the door you are whisked away to a time of Cheapside Theatres and liveried footmen. Yes its old fashioned and a little shabby but give me the shabbiness of marble floors and crystal chandeliers anytime! Everywhere was sparkling and clean and the staff were cheerful and attentive. There is a fabulous history to the place and as much as I like travel lodges, I also like the occasional feeling of floating down grand staircases and having someone hold my chair back for me at mealtimes. Would definately visit again!
