“Very good food”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Visited this pub for lunch last week with some friends. All the starters of different types of pate were very good. For main course, three of us had the Haddock and Chips. This was a sizeable portion. The fish was very white and fresh with a relatively thin layer of beer batter. The chips were chunky and cooked just right. My only slight issue was with the mushy peas. The other member of our party had a tuna steak, which was a bit on the dry side. We had no room for dessert. The service overall was efficient and friendly. I would definitely go back there.

“Po-faced service and armour plated herb crust”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

The multi award winning country pub and restaurant they boast. Well I would say one of the following.
1) We got them on a bad day 2) They are resting on their laurels or 3) Those who have posted positive reviews have low expectations.
We visited for lunch and ordered a fish pie which was very good so I am told and also steak and kidney with herb crust.
The accompanying chips were excellent. The steak pie however was not as the herb crust was like reinforced concrete.
The waitress we had to endure had a face like a wet weekend and an attitude to match. Just the sort of person who should not be in customer service.
The chap who looked to be in charge was a little better but hardly welcoming.
Is there anything more annoying that been asked if everything is alright, which clearly in this case was a perfunctory exercise and then when you mention the lousy crust, there is no apology nor anything.
In short the attitude here was one of not caring what the customer thought.
I do not know who owns this place but they need to get a serious grip if our experience was typical.
I do not want to spend my hard earned money on mediocre food served by a waitress who is a complete misery.
Leave your problems at home dear.
All in all disappointing and this is not somewhere I would rush to re-visit.

“Great pub, food and service”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

Had been recommended to us by family so tried an earlybird menu. Arrived before 7 but after ordering drinks it was after 7 when we sat at table. Asked if we could still have earlybird menu and as we were a party of 6 this was OK. We were amazed by the quality of the food. Had garlic mushrooms - superb - needed a spoon to eat all the garlic sauce. Didn't want to leave any! Fish for mains was also cooked to perfection but as a niggly aside no fish knife offered. We didn't all have room for a pudding but those that did also said they were superb. It was a quietish Monday night so I can only comment on service and quality we found. Would definately return based on what we sampled.

“Birthday meal”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

We went here with our family on a Saturday evening. There were 8 of us including a toddler and a high chair was waiting for us on our reserved table. We were all chatting so the waiter had to come back to us a few times but there wasn't a problem, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We started with the warm loaf which was fab and then had our mains. The vegetables and chips were provided for all of us but were replenished when staff could see that they had almost gone. We all had a great time, good food, good atmosphere and good service. No complaints at all.

“It was'nt like this last time !”
Reviewed September 25, 2012 via mobile

Returning to this gourmet pub with family after a years absence left us very disappointed !

Very limited Sunday lunch menu & the only "special" ( sirloin steak) sold out by the time we sat down at the second sitting ! What's more no sign on the menu of their famous pies.

They did however convince the chef to rustle up a pie for my brother in law who'd travelled a long way so that was a nice touch.

Shame they could not manage a cappuccino for another member of our party - we were told they only do filter coffee on a Sunday !!

All in all we were left disappointed, especially when we've had great food & atmosphere on previous visits.

I just hope they get back to their old ways soon & our visit was just an off day
