I attended a Christmas meal in December 2012 at the Ship and from the first to the last it was a lovely experience, the food was great, the staff attentive and was full value for money.

“Christmas special”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

We decided to take my sister and brother in law to the Ship for Christmas lunch after discovering the hotel when looking for somewhere to drink in Chichester at lunchtime a month earlier. The ambience was impressive, staff were friendly and so we decided to give the Ship a try.
We opted for the £25 per head fixed menu which we had to preorder. We're never over keen on preordering as in reality we like to make the choice on the day. We were also asked to preorder drinks which we refused to do.
The food on the day was very well prepared, well cooked and well presented. Between us, we had the goat's cheese and the game terrine for starters, and turkey and lamb for main course. This was followed by a good selection of sweets. Our table was in a good location by the window although the restaurant was surprisingly half-full particularly as we had heard that the restaurant had just gained an AA Rosette. Whether there has recently been a change of manager or staff, we don't know, but our experience was certainly a lot better than some earlier reviews give them credit for.
However, the most important thing was that my sister and brother-in-law enjoyed the experience.

“Great place for food and drinks!”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

I have been to The Ship many times for drinks in the evenings as I love the beautiful surroundings. It is a great place to go if you want to avoid the busy pubs.

On my latest visit, a Saturday evening, I had planned to go there to enjoy a bottle of wine with my boyfriend, but after feeling a bit peckish we decided to try 'The Ships Plank, which I cant recommend highly enough! We were very pleasently suprised when it was bought to our table. I have never seen such a selection of foods, including smoked salmon, crab, croque monsieur and breads, brilliant! It was more than enough for the two of us and I haven't stopped talking about it since!

“Worth the walk to end of North St”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

We ate in the bar on a Wednesday. Pleasant, quiet surroundings. Quick service - ham, egg and chips; Spanish omelette and chips. Food excellent and fair value given the setting. If you visit Chichester and don't walk down North St from the large fastival theatre car park you might not be aware of this hotel since it is just beyond the pedestrian precinct but it's worth the walk. We would eat there again.

“The Ship Hotel - second word misspelt”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

I should have known that something was wrong when the reservation email showed up without an address or phone number on it with other key details missing. Reception defined it as a computer system changeover error. The car park is quite a way from the front door, down a side road and around the corner. I haven't bothered to describe the lift other than to say that it would probably be condemned on inspection. The hallways and landings weren't hoovered for 2 days and the same fead fly managed to remain in situ for the same period. The room was a disgrace - no soap, the window paint was peeling and with accumulated dirt in the corners, a bed too big for the alcove so that the second bedside table had to be placed under a window away from the bed, minor damage on the walls and no wardrobe - instead a coat rack that had previously been pulled away from the wall and the old fixing holes left on view. The door handle was loose too. The mattress topper was too big for the bed which suffered from a roll into the centre problem. The bathroom - the door was dirty on both sides, paint peeled off the wall, damp coming through the ceiling, calcium deposits on taps and shower hose which was broken. The bath had a water drip mark in it and the toilet rim was dirty underneath (visible when sitting in the bath). The tiled floor was terrible and filled gaps around the radiator could have been done better by a child. The soap (turned up on request) tray was located away from the sink with a drip hole onto the floor. Now I know why they asked to be paid on arrival! Breakfast was interesting - sit where you like Sir (nice touch) and we were handed a menu and asked to choose before we had any time to read it. The buffet had the old empty carton of juice and milk left on one side, probably as an ornament. A change of room was requested, a chance of redemption. Better but .... dirty door, cracked and dirty paintwork on the window and broken plastic on the shower and the valance on the bed was somewhat mangled. Ar last a wardrobe, but with no coathangers. Sadly lacking in TLC with no idea of service at all. Not worth the price of £135 per night and not recommended at all.

The Ships Plank
Moules and frites were good. The tuna and nicoise salad was a lump of tuna on top of a salad that was not nicoise and lacked basics such as olives. The restaurant was cold and noisy and had no soul.
