Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Step back in time at Amberley Museum, a remarkable heritage site in the Sussex South Downs, between Storrington and Arundel, focusing on industrial and transport history. Most days the bus service and narrow gauge railway run, which take visitors to the far end of the site where the electricity, communications and railway exhibition halls can be found. Further exhibits include the working printshop, lime kilns, road steam engines, standard gauge line, stationary engines, greenwood village and more. The Museum is home to traditional craftspeople, such as the woodturners and blacksmith, with a cafe, gift shop, playground, nature trails and picnic areas. It’s well worth a visit and there is plenty to do in all weathers. We are hosting over 50 events in 2017 from children’s activity days to classic vehicle shows; from the amazing Robotslive in July to our new art activity week in August. We open from 8th March to 29th October, seven days a week during Sussex school holidays and on Bank Holidays, otherwise Wednesday to Sunday. Right next to Amberley railway station, with direct trains from London, Bognor and Portsmouth (check before you travel), we have a large, free carpark. Please see our website for further information.

“Brilliant on a fine day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

Based in a derelict chalk mine, this working museum really does transport you back in time, showing near forgotten crafts and skills, an old printing press, wood turning, walking stick making and lots more. It also offers a great little play area, a brilliant couple of units housing old household appliances and telephones that are both interactive, a look at the old chalk mining works, some classic buses and fire engines.. it really is a full day out. If you are able, do go on the woodland walks as they are lovely round the site. For the less able you can take a classic bus ride to each attraction - which is an attraction in itself. We rounded the day off with a lovely ice-cream from the cafe it was delicious

“Brilliant day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

Great fun for all ages with something for everyone. The printing press was a huge success along with the railway and buses. Many of the exhibitions on the site brought back memories for us, very much the place to share between the generations. It's a massive area and deserves a full day. Top tip, arrive early and wear sensible shoes to get the best out of it!

We go here allot. I have two boys, so the vintage buses, vintage fire engines, trains and nature trails are perfect for them. I love the museum too.

“Superb Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

We had a superb visit to Amberley Working Museum.

Of particular interest was the Telephone museum, where everything works and you can see telephones throughout the ages. They even have working 1900's devices that you can use to call a modern 2000's phone! The telegram room has working telegram machines where you can send your family a message while there is currently a video about telegraphs on the Titanic (being the 100th anniversary year).

Well worth a visit.

“An excellent day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2012

I had come across this place when researching for a few days away at Hayling |sland. We were very impressed with the quality of the exhibits, there's a great deal to see and experience. Wheelchair access is very good, although on the day we visited, I was unable to gain access to the train and we had to make our own way to the bottom of the site. Having said that, we might well have missed some of the exhibits if we'd not made our own way around the site.

Top tip, try and visit soon after term starts and before schools start making educational visits. The site was pleasantly quiet and peaceful when we visited early September, two or three days after school holidays finished.
