Just a one night stay for my wife's birthday.
After staying at the Norfolk Arms earlier in the year this was dramatic improvement. We were really impressed with the quality of the room and all the little touches.
Fresh milk for the tea was a real bonus. How many five star hotels offer this?
Food in restaurant was good and breakfast was really good. Chris was very attentive and friendly, even bringing our small dog some fresh water and a bonio whilst we enjoyed a drink or three!
The general manager was also very friendly.
Only small comment, The toilet in room 10 (Butser) needs to be swivelled round a bit or the radiator moved as it really was a squash. Other than that cannot fault the place, and we will return.

Room Tip: I understand rooms no. 2 and 10 are exec rooms that are a bit larger than the others

Stayed here on business but took my wife along as it was her birthday. To be honest we might have got off on the wrong foot as when we arrived there was no one to check us in until we went and found him. Not a major problem - just felt odd.

As has been said previously, this is a pub (albeit a gastro-pub) with rooms. We ended up in an attic room which was extremely small for two people and there two sets of steep stairs to climb to get there so be mindful if you have difficulty walking or large luggage.

Once I'd got over the initial doubts then everything was good. Staff friendly, food really nice, wine reasonably priced. Great choice at breakfast including a freshly prepared fruit platter so all in all I'd say the chef takes pride in his/her work which is important for me.

Centrally located so it's good for access - taking a walk up to the castle and along the river.

Would I stay here again? Possibly but I would ask about the size of the room I was being allocated first.

Room Tip: Front of hotel you may experience noise from the road. Make sure you ask for a large room as some a...

Stayed as part of a very large group for a friend's wedding and the hotel was great. Rooms were very clean and modern, the food was excellent (particularly the beakfasts) and the staff were courteous and attentive. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 14 - nice size and a good view of the castle!

Admittedly, we got a late booking at a bargain price, and apparently it had been an extremely busy day in the Swan. However, these factors probably don't excuse all of the little problems we encountered.

The room was small but nice and appealing. However, while we did get bathrobes and slippers, there were no bath towels, and no toiletries (shampoo, soap, etc.). Other reviewers have commented on the flasks of fresh milk in their room, but not for us ... in fact, the tea-bag looked mouldy, and the biscuits were inedible ... it appeared that house-keeping had not checked or replaced anything in the room for some time. Back downstairs, we mentioned the lack of towels, etc. and were assured that this would be attended to immediately.

Anyway, the bar and restaurant looked nice, the menu was appealing and we settled in for a nice evening meal. Alas, even though it was only 7.15pm, at least 5 or 6 of the main courses were "finished". Eventually, we selected from the very restricted choice and what we got was fine. Then we asked about dessert. After a while we here handed two menus but this was the "main course" menu again - no mention of dessert. We finally did get the correct menu, but then learned that almost all of the choices were "gone". In reality, given their very busy day, the shortage of food and the lack of choice was understandable. However, it would have been better to be told about this before (or as soon as) we sat to our table, and certainly before we ordered our drinks.

Then, it was clear that they wanted to close the bar quite early. Before going back upstairs, we enquired again about the towels and toiletries ... "Oops", they said, "we'll do that straight away". However, after a delay, the knock on the door was to deliver only 2 hand towels and some shampoo, and an apology, as "housekeeping had probably locked the clean bath towels away"?

Next morning ... nice surprise, the breakfast was really scrumptious ... everything about it was first class. It was nice to check out on a positive note, but did the excellent breakfast do enough to make up for the other shortcomings? Probably not. But maybe we just picked the wrong day ...

The hotel is more like Inn for me as the room (number 4) was a bit small but to have a nap is great! Tea and coffe with fresh milk is a nice thing to have. The staff is nice and very helpfull, special thanks to Chris for the hospitality! Will come again!

We stayed at The Swan last night. It was just perfect. Breakfast was the best we've ever ever had in hotels worldwide. Room 7 was small but oh so stylish. Tonight it's The 5 star Grand in Eastbourne and in all honesty, The Swan is just as good. Swan team are tops. Thank you. Xxx john and Sally xx

Excellent hotel, well decorated and comfortable room. All Farrow & Ball colours and lovely prints. How nice to have fresh milk in a flask in your room for tea and coffee and freshly baked biscuits. It is perfectly situated with a view of the Castle from some rooms. The food is excellent, did not have time for evening meal but what a great breakfast. There are no plastic packs of butter or jam, it's all fresh and home cooked food on offer here. Thoroughly recommend this friendly and welcoming hotel.
