Very nice place if you want to have a comfortable weekend away in Arundel. Walking distance to town, scenic location and beautifully fresh air.
We went to the farmers market and had a homemade mince pie and stocked up on spices and artisan supplies from one of the brilliant local shops, before browsing in sparks yard for American sweets and Christmas decorations and gifts. Both recommended if you have the time. In the evening we ate at the bay tree which I have reviewed separately.
Back to the room: it was nicely furnished with a huge bed, wall mounted tv, sofa, desk etc and had an ensuite with a spacious shower. All very clean and well maintained. Alison was a friendly hostess and we never wanted for milk, tea/coffee during our stay as it was replenished regularly.
There was a pool table in the dining area which was a nice touch and we took advantage of that one evening whilst chatting. It certainly looks like it has been well used!
Breakfast in the morning was served between 7:30 and 9:30, and was a generous offering with fresh warm rolls and exceptional homemade jam to nibble on to start, with the option of fruit, yoghurt, museli if desired, before the full English with tea or coffee and fresh juice. I believe the juice one morning was a nice blend of orange, peach/nectarine, and vanilla- although I may be wrong. The cooked breakfast was of above average quality, with very good sausages and thick bacon. Cooked very well I might add.
So why not 5 stars? Very minor quibbles really which whilst I feel need not detract from the stay, do prevent it being perfect! The WiFi in the room we stayed in was very, very weak, which made it hard to access the internet on the tablet, not a deal breaker, just irritating. Secondly, I am not sure if we were unlucky or if the hot water is on a timer, but we both had a tepid to cold shower each during the course of the stay. So as I say, not deal breakers, but it means it wasn't perfect. But it was highly recommended and very very nice. Will return.
The good: fantastic location and room, delicious breakfast with attention to detail, pool table, lovely owner
The bad: WiFi not particularly useful, shower ran cold (but perhaps we were unlucky)
The ugly: leaving the beautiful countryside and cosy room and going back to reality!
Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend hanger down house.
