“A good modern novel!”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

We went for a late Sunday lunch, the place is nicely plainly decorated, but pleasant. As it was not busy we were allowed to choose our table. We had the roast pork, lamb shanks and a chicken dish. All our plates went back empty and we did not have room for desserts. The vegetables were served separately and were not soggy. The mains were well seasoned and cooked as needed. The stuffing and Yorkshires were excellent with the pork.
This is a place i would happily revisit for a coffee, lunch or dinner with friends and family.

“good food; good price”
Reviewed April 30, 2013

I went here for lunch with a friend and the food was very good. The restaurant was relaxed and we could have a leisurely lunch and the price was really good value. I had a chickenwich which was really tasty and very filling. It had a good atmosphere and was great for meeting up! The staff were helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble.

There is outdoor seating on the pedestrianised street but it just isn't warm enough yet to warrant sitting outdoors!

“Splendid breakfast”
Reviewed April 30, 2013 via mobile

I visited Playwrights for a breakfast with my partner recently whilst visiting the city and we both loved it. He had the traditional breakfast which was all cooked freash and to order and I had the eggs benedict (with homemade sauce) the price was good and the lady that ran the café was lovely and helpful.

“Very good food - poor service”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

My husband and I had a delicious lunch at this attractive cafe just a few steps from the stunning Coventry Cathedral. We give this cafe high marks for food and a pleasant cheerful decor but low marks for service, unfortunately.

The cafe had run out of the soup special but had not erased it on the chalk board. The hostess said there were specials but said there were too many for her to remember and asked us to walk across the restaurant to see them for ourselves. There were two.

When we finally ordered and received our food, that was the last of our service. When we were ready to pay our bill the server was on her break, sitting at the counter, so the hostess rang up our bill - but incorrectly. She hadn't recalled the correct price. We finally got everything straightened out, but feel The Playwright could be a really good cafe with better organization and thus improved service. Their food was really tasty and it is too bad to have the lack of good service take away from a good memory.

“Always a wonderful gastronomic experience”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

This weekend gone, I spent some wonderful hours in this delightful restaurant. The menu is vast – I don't know how they do it! The evening menu is just what you would expect from a classy restaurant. Meal, fish and vegetarian options. The food, what type is always beautifully cooked and presented. The ambience is great – a small place in a side street.
Breakfast is also served everyday. Again, a good variety to suit all tastes.
Alcohol is available. the wine list has great choices. I prefer reds and they are just the ticket.
The prices are fair.
Try this place. It will not disappoint.
