Converted from a large country house built over the years (starting in medieval times) with a moat, it's a lovely hotel which plays well on its oldy worldy atmosphere - big fires, cosy high backed chairs etc - great on a winter's night. Our room (and a few others) had a sort of four poster bed in it (huge), silk fleur de lys pattern wallpaper (wont have been cheap), thick velvet curtains etc; It might all look old, but its well maintained and its definitely not shabby.
We stayed on a Friday night when they do a deal of dinner, bed and breakfast for about £200 for two. The restaurant is an a newer part of the house; not in the same style of the rest of the decor but OK. Food was good; well executed modern european, supported by a decent (and reasonably priced) wine list. Service was OK but lacked the polish you'd find in some smarter restaurants; it was nothing horrendous but little things like having to serve our own wine, or being asked who'd ordered what. That said, staff (both in the restaurant and around the hotel) were helpful and polite.
I'd definitely stay here again; we used it as a stop off on the way up north (its not that much of detour off the M1). There was a wedding in progress; this is the ideal hotel for that kind of do.
