“Great food, well worth a visit”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

We booked a table here early evening on a Friday afternoon and there was not another table free in here as it appears to be a very popular eating pub. The staff were very polite and friendly, right from booking over the phone to our table service. The food was well cooked and generously portioned and came out in a timely fashion. My only concern was the huge menu on offer-a family member enquired as to whether the fishcakes were freshly made to be told no, they were bought in which is a shame. A smaller menu would allow more opportunity for them to really concentrate on what they obviously do very well. However, that is not really a complaint, more of an observation. I would be more than happy to eat here again and would recommend it to anyone looking to somewhere to eat at around the £10-15 per head mark for a main course.

“Unexpectedly excellent”
Reviewed July 27, 2011

From the outside, this diminutive-looking place in the village of Shilton appears to be any standard pub, and not particularly special. However, everything from the friendly staff and the extensive, varied menu to the perfectly cooked food and good range of reasonably-priced drinks makes it a great place for a meal out.

As another reviewer said, it is not a fine dining establishment - just a pub that serves inventive and extremely good food. There is a huge menu offering everything from burgers, steaks, fish and salads to pub classics (cottage pie; ham and eggs etc.) and more more exotic options like Thai fishcakes, fajitas with a choice of fillings, curry of the day, chicken breast with brie, smoked salmon and prawns, sea bass, mushrooms topped with chilli con carne etc. etc., and a specials menu as well! A large and quite exciting vegetarian menu is also available.

We have visited many times before over the past 6-7 years, and during that time I've sampled many things including fish pie, crocodile in garlic butter with prawns, kangaroo steak (not my favourite) and salmon fajitas.

On this visit, the homemade mushroom soup went down very well as a starter for two of our party, and the Thai cod & prawn fishcake and Mexican mushrooms were gorgeous and more-ish. The fish and chips was probably the best I've ever eaten, with light, crisp and tasty batter, thick, chunky and tender fish and plenty of well-cooked chunky chips, plus a mountain of lovely peas (I normally don't like pub peas as they are usually like bullets or overcooked into a mush - but these were perfect). It was a huge portion but somehow I managed to eat almost all of it! My husband's 'Nutty Goat' from the specials menu was penne pasta with a creamy sauce, cherry tomatoes, spinach, pine nuts, goat's cheese and other veg, and declared to be top notch. The sea bass with lemon butter was delicate and very nicely prepared.

The selection of desserts was lovely, but only two of us indulged. I am assured the cheesecake was fabulous, and there are some interesting cheeses on the cheeseboard option, including a spicy Tex Mex cheese and some lovely, creamy Brie. Celery and onion chutney make nice accompaniments too.

The food is only slightly more expensive than an average pub, but very high quality and served in generous portions. The wines were not expensive, and the friendly service was the icing on the cake of this great evening out. A winner.

“Used groupon voucher good value for money”
Reviewed June 28, 2011

Me and the girls went to the shilton arms for a girls night out using the groupon voucher.
We had a lovely meal, it is a pub so we were not expecting fine dinning.
I aswell had the cherry sea bass and totally disagree with the previous lady saying it was horrible, it says on the menu it comes in balsamic vinegar so that is what i expected and thought it complemented the fish very well.
My other friend has an allergy to shell fish, but is fine with normal fish and wanted a fish pie (which contains prawns) and staff were very helpful and would be no problem and made her one with out prawns.
My 4 other friends also enjoyed the meals, we would recommend it.

“Very unsatifactory, tasteless dining experience.”
Reviewed June 11, 2011

Had a groupon voucher and thought it would be nice to try a meal. Meal was awful, ordered the cherry seabass, basically just loads of balsamic vinegar thrown over sea bass which smelt like my guinea pigs droppings. Was served with some half cooked tasteless cherry tomatoes. My partner ordered the steak which was ok but spoilt by the diane sauce which looked like gravy, and tasted horrible. Was very disappointed with the whole experience and wouldn't recommend it.
