“A great way to ruin an evening out”
Reviewed March 30, 2010

After a good visit here one lunchtime we decided to visit for our wedding anniversary last week. Unfortunately we had an appalling time, and will never return to the restaurant again.

When we arrived the restaurant was empty, which isn't a problem. However, the very next couple to arrive were seated directly behind us, meaning we could hear all of their converstion, which obviously wouldn't happen if the place was more bustling. The couple then asked the waiter if a window could be opened. The waiter didn't even bother to ask us if this would be ok, despite the fact that the windows are large and this would undoubtedly affect us too. With a cold draft coming in we had to move table. When the food arrived, it wasn't great, and my husbands pizza resembled a salad there was that much rocket on it. He questioned that it was the right salad, and was simply told that yes it was, there was no menu brought over to reassure him. When we asked to see the pudding board there were only 2 puddings on it, neither of which were to our taste, and the waiter never once returned to our table to ask if we needed drinks refilling, despite empty glasses on the table. It's ashame because the venue is nicely decorated, and the food isn't too expensive, but that was a very poor experience on what I consider to be an important night out. We'll never go again.

“Don't bother”
Reviewed February 27, 2010

After walking round the city centre on a wet Thursday evening, this place looked quite inviting, had a stylish sort of decor and was playing our favourite Nora Jones tune. However, that's where the praise ends I'm afraid.

Drinks: The house white wine was awful (although the red was nice). We mentioned this to staff who couldn't have cared less. The tap water tasted of chlorine.

Food: Some bread and oil/vinegar and some rather sad-looking olives arrived a few minutes after ordering, presented by someone who appreared to be the manager - but who made no effort other than to place the dish on the table and leave quickly. (Customers appeared to be beneath him.) The oil was, unfortunately, better used for cooking than for dipping. Our pasta dishes were good but the side dish of vegetables (potato chips and peppers) had to be returned as they were only partially cooked. Eventually a new bowl was brought, once we'd almost finsihed eating, but sadly they came back almost as raw. Again, we mentioned this to staff upon paying bill and the response was simply "I'll pass it on to the chef".

Atmosphere: Only 3-4 other tables in a quite large space should not create as much noise as there was. The restaurant clearly caters well for groups judging by the table of students celebrating something. But we and other diners were not given much attention, despite it being a very quiet night and plenty of staff in attendance (including, as mentioned, someone who appeared to be the manager/owner but who may as well not have been there). The service we did recieve was very perfunctory and not even well-executed, as mentioned above. I felt that diners were simply in the way for staff and not the reason they were there! There also appeared to be a locksmith in attendance throughout the evening changing locks on external doors (with the resulting draft for customers, for which no apology was made by staff!), which may indicate an underlying reason for the long faces all evening. But we left as soon as we could, and no-one seemed bothered in the slightest.

Overall - despite some real areas for dissatisfaction, staff clearly didn't care that we hadn't enjoyed our experience and we had to pay a full bill for things we couldn't even eat/drink. I definitely would not recommend this experience to anyone who wants to be treated as a restaurant diner and not a customer at McDonalds.
