I'm so happy to have found this place - it was recommended by colleagues at my new workplace in Coventry. I've been trying to find a 'proper old balti-house' - Birmingham/Sparkbrook have gone all fancy. My criteria are: meals served in a big metal karahi, BYOB, cutlery provided is fork & spoon, no tablecloths, no food-warmers, no fuss.
Ally's was perfect. It's above an Italian restaurant so it's tricky to find unless you're looking for it. We had a booth by a window. Service was enthusiastic and warm, with the right mix of attentiveness and leaving-us-alone. We were pleased that tap water is free (which is unusual in places with no alcohol licence).
Our food: king prawn pathia and veggie dhansak were fab - great big portions, filling and tasty. (And not swimming in ghee.) With light plain rice and a perfect naan (again not oily). We'd advise anyone having a meat/prawn balti to add veggies for the extra 50p - otherwise it's the meat in a load of balti sauce. (My partner was envious of my karahi full of veg.)
Great value. We'll be back soon.
