We booked the Madeira because of its proximity to the Hospital and after reading the reviews (which I now believe must have been posted by the owner!). My doubts were already raised when we arrived and there was no-one on the premises, the outside looks in dire need of redecoration, paint flaking from the windows, the front door with a botched lock on it! After calling the owner she arrived after twenty minutes in her car and let us is in and the smell of dirty carpets and neglect hits you straight away. The 'reception' area/guest lounge was cluttered and dirty. Stella the 'proprietor' gave us our key, we had booked a twin room for three nights. We weren't shown to the room just told on what floor it was. The stairs were covered in stained dirty carpets, dirty paintwork on either side and my heart sank! The room was the tiniest double ever! We went back down to tell Stella we had booked a twin room and she said she would put a single bed in the room for us! We asked her where she thought this would go as it was barely big enough for the one bed and asked for a twin room which is what we had booked. She then gave us the key to another room on the top floor. This was without a doubt the smallest twin room I have ever seen. There wasn't even enough room for one chair! The bathroom was about as big as an IKEA single wardrobe although on the plus side it was only 6 inches from my bed! The beds were non matching, one was a metal sprung base only seen before on Midnight Express and the 'divan' had a greasy stained headboard. On the plus side the bedding was clean, I'm guessing because it was laundered elsewhere! After a traumatic day with a very sick relative we arrived back at the accommodation. After squeezing past each other to use the bathroom we settled down for the night. Not that easy as the traffic noise is terrible and added to the symnphony coming from the bed springs sleep was near nigh impossible. At half past one I was jolted awake by the scream of my sister who, leaning over to get her drink from the floor, (there is no bedside table) had seen 'something run under her bed! Needless to say we spent the rest of the night awake me in my squeaky bed and my sister on the greasy stained window seat cushion staring at the floor! We showered at 6:30am and waited till 7:30am when breakfast was due to start to approach Stella. Surprisingly there was no activity at 7:30am but she did turn up just after. We explained what had happened. Stella assured us that they had had bed bugs in the past and she used rat control and had cats so thought it was unlikely that there were rats or mice in the room and in any case it was our word against hers! Yep it is Stella. She said as we weren't happy she wouldn't charge us, thank you for that but quite honestly we would have preffered a clean room and a restful night. She did call us twice that morning to tell us she had called Environmental Health at 8:15am and she needed an address to send the report to which we gave her and again at 11:00am to say Environmental Health had been and could find nothing. That isn't the way Environmental Health work! We are still waiting for the report and if we get it and its genuine I'll eat my hat! Don't go to this hotel. Most people who stay here are doing so because they have sick relatives at the hospital. Go to the Norwood Hotel next door where Mark and Julie run a fantastic hotel, clean, warm, friendly, a lovely bar where you can relax at night and a great breakfast in the morning.
