“They have made amends”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

Prior to the publishing of our earlier review 'unacceptable treatment'. The management kindly offered us some recompense, which we accepted.

Menzies have some lovely hotels and we have stayed at the Strathallen before and have been very satisfied.

A great pity about our last attempt!

Room Tip: Make sure the room is still available, before you depart!

No stars. This hotel was booked four weeks ago and we arrived about 1.45 p.m. for checking in before 2.00p.m. We had come because we were going to see a play at the Birmingham Rep and as we are elderly people in our seventies, needed to rest our heads before and after this. My husband had booked an executive room. Imagine our anger and horror to be told that our room had been double booked (six rooms in all) and they wanted to send us to some 2star hotel in Oldbury, miles away. Apparently all the Birmingham hotels were full because of "the cricket" at Edgbaston.

We refused and I asked the boy on the desk why the people who booked the room after us weren't sent to the Oldbury hotel? He couldn't answer and did not seem at all concerned at the situation. He couldn't have cared less and it was not his fault, he said. We had been phoned to warn us (there was a message timed at 1.27 p.m. on our answerphone when we got home - about the same time as we were trying to check in).

This is unacceptable treatment of guests by a hotel and the Menzies Strathallan have no idea of the depth of our anger. We had to hang around Birmingham in the rain for six hours until the play started. I can't begin to express our feelings. I want heads to roll. But of course they won't, as the management just couldn't care less.

This is the second time we've stayed at the Strathallan. It's not the most modern of establishments and the rooms we've stayed were in a bit of a time warp but it's clean, well situated and incredibly good value for money. Our last stay, for example, with free parking and wi-fi and a really good buffet breakfast (better than in some higher priced hotels) worked out at £50 a night for a double room.
This is an unusually designed building as it's circular so rooms either face inwards to the ring of the doughnut or outwards to the Hagley Road. The inner rooms are smaller and there's no view but they seem quiet and we had a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed. The outer rooms are larger and traffic noise is present but it's well screened by treble glazing and, again, the bed was comfortable. There was no air-con in our room but Reception staff provided a fan when we asked for one.
Another strength of this hotel is that all members of staff are polite, helpful and really professional.

I was travelling with business colleagues who were both allocated spacious rooms on the outside fo the hotel. I had taken by husband with me but allocated a pokey room overlooking the well, so it was very dark and only a glimpse of the sky could be seen by peering upwards. We kept on falling over each others suitcases as there was no storage space.
The inner rooms would be OK for a single person in winter as they would be quite cozy but not for a couple. I did not complain as I had not realised until the next morning, bigger rooms were available.

Room Tip: Not an inside room

Quite why my wife and I ended up in Birmingham is a long story however the Menzies Hotel was to be our destination. Thanks to previous contributors we easily found the hotel due to its strange architecture. It really is a weird shaped building for a hotel.
Once inside however we found a bright modern establishment. The ground floor comprises reception/lounge/dining areas. Check in was quick and efficient and carried out by a pleasant young man. First negative however - a supposed four star hotel but no offer was made to assist with luggage to the room. Our allocated room was situated in the inner circle and again as previously described is wedge shaped. The room was immaculate, well fitted, however! It was compact. My wife and I found difficulty in navigating around each other and I eventually ended up just crawling across the bed at times. The space between the foot of the bed and the wall was only about two feet and you had to be careful not to bang your head on the projecting wall television when passing. The only very small window looked into the inner circle but all that could be seen was other windows and concrete. It could be quite claustrophobic. The bathroom was not too bad a size taking the room into consideration and once more was spotless and well fitted.
I tried to nosey into rooms situated on the outer circle but was unsuccessful. Surely they must be larger in size and therefore well worth requesting. At least they have outer facing windows.
We dined in the hotel restaurant on both evenings and have no complaints whatsoever about the rather good food offered. On night one I was surprised to see omelette on the menu which I ordered out of curiosity and was not disappointed. A very unique and enjoyable take on this dish. Breakfast was also very good, buffet of course, but compared to a lot of hotels all the available dishes were warm and regularly refreshed.
The hotel situation may be slightly outside the city centre however accessing the same is very easy due to the very frequent bus services into town. The bus stop is immediately outside the front door of the hotel.
In conclusion a two day stopover was more than enough in such a compact room I could not have stayed any longer. An outside room may be more accommodating but I did not have the opportunity to check perhaps another traveller could comment. It is for this reason I cannot give the hotel any more than three stars.
