There is no other place like Franzl's. I revisited for the first time in almost 20 years with my parents and adult daughter hoping it would be a great night out, as none of them had ever dined here. I was not in the slightest disappointed. We chose our meals in the bier keller over pre dinner drinks; 3 courses are offered for a set price according to your choice of main meal, all cooked by the Austrian husband of the vivacious hostess. My parents had a slightly more limited choice, both being vegetarians, but were not restricted much as vegetables were plentiful and the soup of the day was a veggie one. Olive bread or date and walnut bread was offered on the evening in question, & was warm and very moreish. My daughter found the venison pie delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken with butter nut squash. In days of yore, waiting staff would serve accompanying vegetables from hostess trolleys, but now dishes are brought to the table for your party to help themselves. We were told to ask for more if we wanted topping up! The biggest problem we all had was choosing a sweet from over a dozen on offer. We all agreed it was a superb evening, all of us tried foods we had never had before and the atmosphere was lovely. Andre Rieu playing throughout, waiting staff attentive and courses delivered at a comfortable pace.
I would suggest it more a place for "grown ups" and you would be unable to visit the snug bar if you find stairs difficult. Booking is essential, they only open for a few hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Around £30 a head including all drinks. An experience truly unique in the Midlands if not the entire UK. Go.
