“Nice on a deal, but there are better places at a more reasonable cost”

Description: "Bar Epernay is part of one of Birmingham's most exclusive developments, The Mailbox. Perfect, really, when it's target audience is big spenders. It looks as French and sophisticated as it sounds. There's a centrepiece trendy open-flame fire, and cool music, which lunchtimes and evenings emanates live from the revolving grand piano. Bar Epernay serves good, brasserie-style food - lots of fish and seafood like oysters, lobster tail and pan-fried king scallops to accompany a 23-strong champagne offering; four by the glass. There's always a bubbly of the month, such as Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage 2000, £37.50 (usually £55). Vintage champers and non-vintage prices? Chin, chin! "

“Nice on a deal, but there are better places at a more reasonable cost”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

My boyfriend and I dined here on a Groupon deal - two courses with a glass of champagne. There were no restrictions on the menu, but two of the more expensive dishes carried a £3 supplement which is quite normal on the deals. The restaurant is nice and modern and seemed to have a pleasant ambience and for a Sunday afternoon was relatively busy. However, we have to mention the guy playing, or should we say tinkling on the piano in the corner. Not really our cup of tea, but certainly not offensive and better than blaring music whilst you are trying to have a nice relaxed lunch. We both chose the chicken and chorizo skewers to start, which were very tasty, but very small so definitely not worth it if you are paying full price. We both opted for the lamb chump main course, which again was very tasty and succulent, but perhaps a tad pricey if you were not on a deal. We did choose to have a sweet each which was extra, but finished the meal off nicely. The staff all seemed very pleasant and attentive and we certainly didn’t have to wait long between courses.

We had a nice pleasant Sunday afternoon meal, but we probably wouldn’t rush to go back unless there was another deal on offer, as it is fairly pricey for what you get and there are nicer and cheaper places closer to home.

“As part of a deal, not bad.....”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I thought long and hard before writing this review. I attended with a friend as part of a groupon deal for lunch. The deal was 2 courses with a glass of champagne. There were no restrictions on what we could have, but there was a supplement on a couple of dishes, fairly standard rule.
There was enough to choose from on the menu for both of us and we were asked if we wanted out champagne, which arrived promptly.
When we ordered we were one of 2 tables occupied and so was not expecting a long wait, which to be fair we did not. Both starters, pate and seafood salad very nice.
2 more drinks and wait for main course. Took a little longer than I expected, but as I was with a friend, we did not really notice. Both of us had fish, I would say mine was slightly overcooked, but did not spoil the meal.
Another drink and decided no dessert (thought a tad pricey).
Service throughout was good and attentive, although 3-4 staff on and max 5 tables occupied at any one time.
As we had already paid for food, only bill was for the drinks which did not seem overly excessive.

Conclusion : Nice, great place to catch up with a friend, would I have paid full price, probably not as there are other places I have been where food has struck me as better for same money. Can't fault the service as mentioned.

“Great Location, Excellent Service and a Piano Bar............”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Popped in here with the Mrs so we could have a swift drink, on the terrace overlooking the canals, and a gust of wind blew us inside to a terrific atmosphere. And a Live Piano Bar.
So good we stayed for a two course meal, excellently prepared and served, and another round or was it two?

“Wedding Anniversary visit”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

Friday lunchtime visit with my wife of three years. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Mrs D had the mixed seafood salad ( complained about the receptacle being too small for the salad). Lots of mussels, squid and some shrimps. I had the chicken/chorizo skewer. Chicken perfectly cooked.

For mains we had supreme of chicken with risotto and calves liver with colcannon. Both were nicely cooked, both were of a decent size ( you won't be visiting the chip shop on the way home!!)

Wine list is good as well with bottles for under 20 quid.

“Bravo Bar Epernay”
Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

The atmosphere is chilled and relaxing. We visited in August on spec. We ordered a bottle of champagne and Red wine. We has table service and staff couldn't do enough to help. We decided to eat without a booking (not recommended) but only had to wait 30 minutes, and there was no rush to give our table up. I had pâté and steak with to die for chunky chips, whilst chap had prawns and chicken. The food was hot and fresh and table service was professional and not stuffy. No room for pudding as food was so good! Will visit again soon. Only feedback is have fabric serviettes and not tissues, would make a big difference :-)
