Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Star City
Ranked #85 of 118 Hotels in Birmingham

Me and my friend stayed here for one night 13th October. We had tickets for Ray Davies at Symphony Hall. Entrance to the hotel was quite difficult to find but once we found it check in was efficient. Without exception all the staff were very helpful and friendly. Bed was comfy but the pillows were awful. The breakfast which was included in the room rate was really good. The only problem we found was the distance to the town; we spent the same on taxis as what the hotel cost. With hindsight we should have booked the Hampton by Hilton on Broad Street to save on taxi fares. There didn't seem to be any fixed rate for the journey; one taxi driver asked us what we usually paid!!! I think if the hotel are using a certain cab firm they should at least have some sort of set price for hotel customers.

Found this hotel by chance as It was a late evening visit, and we were going shopping the next day, we entered the building and no-one was around, but eventually a lovely lady turned up. She was very helpful, she even gave us a charger as our Tom Tom was faulty.

The room was warm and clean and the shower was powerful. Later that evening we went for a stroll to Star City and there were a few shops around but they were about to close, so we took a cab which cost £6 into the city which was much more lively.

We had a continental breakfast the next morning, which was standard.

Great stay, would definitely reccommend this hotel.

This Hampton Inn (by Hilton) was somewhat confusing to reach, but it was very convenient once we arrived. It is only a 5 minute walk from Star City, a popular entertainment area with pubs and dining and is about 10-15 minutes from the airport and the NEC. It has all the facilities expected from a modern hotel, and is run by a friendly, outgoing staff who strive to please. On-site parking is free. The rooms are reasonably sized with good shelf storage but no drawers. Both wired and wireless Ethernet is available in the room, and Wi-Fi can be found throughout the hotel. There is a good make-up space for ladies with power and mirror, but power points are a bit sparse. The bath is modern with a large shower. Limited food is available throughout the day and nice evening pub-like atmosphere with beers and ales on tap. Breakfast is "American" style but choices are somewhat limited. We were told that this hotel is soon to change hands and will become a Holiday Inn Express. It's good now, so let's hope it stays that way. We will leave it up to subsequent reviewers to let us know.

The hotel is a bit difficult to find. We would have liked more drawers in the bedroom and a wider variety of breakfast items.

I stayed for one night at this hotel. Room was a good size and clean and not too noisy given proximity to road. However, there was no hot water the following morning. When I mentioned this at check-out, I was told "yes, we know". There was no attempt to apologise or express any concern. I appreciate a boiler can break down (or whatever the reason was) but find it extraordinary that no apology or explanation was offered. By the way, the coffee from the machine at breakfast is pretty dire!

Loved it nothing bad to say even though it's on the star city roundabout I could not hear any noise. Bit of truck offloading noise some mornings but tolerable. Staff pleasant. I could love to stay again.

Nice hotel. Didn't know much about it and booked 12 hours before the stay - got the idea that it was the cheaper version of the "Hilton". Matched and even surpassed all requirements - breakfast was VERY good.

Room layout was good. Spacious and comfy. We were on the second floor, next to the road - however no disturbance.

Staff all friendly and willing to help.

We wanted somewhere close to the centre of Birmingham for a shopping trip and this worked out to be fine. Check in was quick enough, the check in staff very pleasant and chatty without being false and nosey. The rate we paid was £44 and pre paid comes with free internet and free breakfast and yes free parking. Room was chilly and had to turn the A/C off in order to correct the problem, but when i tried to turn the heating on via the control panel, nothing happened. Room is pretty big, bigger than we expected, a flat screen tv with only 6 or 7 channels not even freeview but with free internet we could use the laptop for tv, an alarm clock, a table and arm chair in the room makes life easier for anyone who has work to do . The bed is large enough and very comfortable and comes with great pillows. Tea/coffee making facilities, iron and ironing board, so much more than expected. The room and bathroom very very clean so house keeping did a great job. Taxi down town is approx £8 no easy access to public transport so expect to have to use taxi's. In the morning breakfast was help yourself, and okay. Cereal or yoghurt available, brown or white toast, a selection of coffee's free from a vending machine okay, but not really brilliant, and they had orange juice which came from a small vending machine which tasted like weak coloured water. The cooked breakfast was a let down too, beans okay but cold, scrambled egg cool and tasteless, sausages awful, but the bacon was okay and a good quality. So bacon on toast all round. Check out was effortless and really nice staff who also pointed out the Hilton Honours point scheme. All in all, a really nice clean tidy hotel with good staff who are trying hard to be helpful and nice and yes we would stay here again.

Room Tip: Third floor
