“Worth joining the National Trust for....”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

My two children (15 and 12) and I went to the Back to Backs to bring a school history project to life. I thought that it might be interesting to see just how small and cramped housing was. We had a little difficulty booking (the attraction is run by volunteers so you can only book by phone and when they are open - which means not on a Monday and only after 10.30am).. and I was a little frustrated that the B2Bs were fully booked for 4 dys ahead and I almost changed my mind!

The reason for booking is tht tours run every 15 minutes with only 8 people per tour. This means that they become booked up very quickly and you cannot just turn up on spec. We saw a few people try this while we were there and they were turned away disappointed.

But we trekked into Birmingham yesterday and joined the 1.30pm tour which was led by a charming and knowledgeable lady who did a fantastic job of bringing history from 1830 to 1966 to life. We were also lucky to have people who had lived in B2Bs on our group. They were able to bring their own experiences into the group and were encouraged to do so by the guide. The children were also engaged by being asked to try things.

This is a great way to get a feel for what life was like for the majority of people in industrial cities. Really worth going to. Thanks especially to the guides who give up their time for and share their knowledge and enthusiasm so well.

And the sweet shop is worth a stop too...

Go see for yourselves..
