“Good for one night”
Reviewed September 21, 2011

I stayed there for one night for a conference. Lucas House offers basic accomodation - a true "no frills" experience. Located in a very quiet area and providing free parking and Wifi it is a convenient place if you're looking for proximity to Birmingham University. The premises look and feel rather dated, but the room was clean. Wouldn't want to walk barefoot on the carpet, though. All in all: you pay what you get for.

Room Tip: I had a room facing to the backyard. Very quiet!

As the other reviews already state these are very basic accommodations that are reasonably clean (don't look too closely in the corners) near the university, which is located outside of Birmingham (not in walking distance). Attending business/events at the university is the main (only?) reason to stay there. My room was in Hornton Grange across the road from Lucas house and was better than than the room in Lucas house I stayed in last time. Be prepared to have to ask for fresh towels if you don't like re-using damp ones (the towel heater was not working, and in typical English climate, they don't dry within a day). A small soap and shampoo is provided (probably one can ask for more if one runs out) and the room had an iron & ironing board. The wifi was sufficient to use Skype and the password works anywhere on campus. I gave it an average rating as compared to other university accommodations.

On the rather positive side, they are serving both breakfast and dinner in Lucas house, which is very convenient if you just want to get something to eat and don't want to make the trip back to the city center. Dinner is actually quite good and very reasonably priced. It is carefully prepared and there are three choices for the main course. Be aware that there is a sign-up sheet for dinner as there are sometimes large groups though it never filled up when I was there.

Overpriced for what is basically a student room. Reception staff friendly but breakfast was poorly done - food not ready on time and staff served themselves before the customers! Authentic UK service experience but...

I was in Birmingham for surgery, and had already tried the Plough and Harrow and the Strathallan. Both were disappointing.
The Conference Park was convenient to the hospital so my sister could stay nearby. Staff were overall very accommodating, buffet breakfasts were generous. We had a quiet room overlooking the grounds. Free coffee and tea available near the restaurant were very welcome, free wi-fi, walk-in-shower very helpful. We were able to walk over to the Winterbourne House and gardens for tea. We took taxis into Harborne, the nearest shopping area. In the summer, supper service is not always available so we had to do take-out one night, but the bar is open for lighter snacks and sandwiches.
I would recommend the Conference Park as good value for the money.

Having been to many, many conferences, I thought the standards at the Venue were probably the best of an often very bad bunch. I stayed in the modern Lucas House, where staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the room was perfectly bright, clean and acceptable and above all quiet as it is well away from any student carousing (there were few people staying so I could not test the sound proofing of the walls - or not...). Breakfast in the morning was good and at least you did not have to trek over to a campus canteen as is so often the case. The rack of newspapers provided was also welcome. In the evening the bar was also very useful as was having a restaurant on site (although I did not try it myself so cannot vouch for quality). I thought it good value for £60. It is however slightly hard to get to by public transport, unless you can walk the 20 minutes or so from the University station, but for drivers there is some parking on site, again very useful. It also took me a good 10-15 minutes to walk to the Arts Building on campus in the morning.

I stayed at Lucas House whilst on a course. Good points - reasonably sized room & bathroom, comfy bed, location. Bad points - shabby furniture in what appears to be ex student halls - this gave the room a bit of a depressing feel. No sound proofing whatsoever - luckily there was not much activity on the Terrace Bar during my stay. But the worse thing was the cleanliness - stain on bed sheet and the carpet & bathroom needed a good clean. Shabbiness I can cope with - previous residents pubic hairs covering the bathroom floor, not so! Cleaners didn't seem remotely interested. Shame as potentially with a bit of tlc this place could scrub up better.

I stayed at Lucas House whist at a conference. The place was easy to find & I had no trouble parking. All the staff I encountered were pleasant and helpful and the hotel was clean. The public areas are more modern than the bedrooms but none the less they have all the things you would find in any hotel – flat screen tv, tea & coffee (and biscuits!!), bottled water, toiletries, hairdryer, iron etc. The single room I had was a decent size as was the bathroom, which had just a shower (no bath) that was adequately powerful. The lighting was ok in the room although the bedside light could have been brighter & a radio alarm clock was provided too. I did find the room to very warm and if I had the window open it was very noisy. I was given a password at reception to access free wi-fi

Breakfast was a buffet, with sufficient choice to fill you up. I also had the pleasure of eating lunch and dinner in the restaurant and the food was excellent. It is mainly self service and for lunch you had choice of 3/4 main courses and dessert & at dinner it was 3 course meal, again with 3/4 choices of each, with starter and warm bread roll served to your table. There is a pleasant bar area in Hornton Grange (another part of conference facilities) and lovely gardens to sit out in with a nice glass of wine after a hard day!

If you are attending something at Birmingham University and need to stay close by I would recommend Lucas House.
