“Popped in for Breakfast only..”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2008

We found ourselves in Birmingham early one morning in need of a good breakfast. We've stayed at Malmaison before but not Hotel du Vin and so took the opportunity to see what it was like, at least on the food front. Service was fairly indifferent, not a smile to be seen, and our waitress twice tried to give our breakfast order to someone else. The Full English was adequate, but didn't justify it's price tag of £13.50 (one small mushroom and one tomato half was all they could stretch to!). When we asked for some more toast, it was not well received! Though we didn't see the rooms, we had a quick around the reception and communal areas and it did look a bit tired, also, personally the central atrium looks tacky to me with fake greenery everywhere. It certainly put us off coming back to stay.

My wife and I stayed here in late April '08. We have stayed in four hotels in the centre Birmingham in the last 6 months and we have to say that Hotel Du Vin is the best hotel we have stayed in, in Birmingham, so far. The bathroom design is exactly what we want from a hotel stay; the staff were friendly; the food in the bistro was out of this world. Our only regret was that we did not leave enough time to sample the spa treatments. In fact it is the best hotel we have ever stayed in within the UK. We will be returning to this hotel in the future and will look at other Hotel Du Vin before considering other hotels elsewhere in the UK.

We had booked a room together with a resturant reservation for a price of £129.00 on the Land and Sea Menu.

Nice room which was very clean, although the bathroom grouting was looking a bit tired and needed a bit of bleach!!

The room was neither hot or cold and it was difficult to control to an acceptable temperature. When the air con was on to cool the room there was an annoying noise.

Before our meal we had a drink in the bar which was packed and we struggled to find a seat. Near to us was a group of people who seemed to have had far to much to drink and the singing and their loud voices became very irrating afer a while.

The resturant was very nice and the staff were extremely friendly, efficient and knowledegable. All of the food we ordered was of a high standard and very tasty, we could find no fault with it.

On booking out the reception staff were excellent and our car had already been parked at the front of the hotel ready for our departure.

Overall a pleasant night with good food but spoilt a little by the noise in the bar, which the staff struggled to control.

  • Liked — Food, Champagne and Wine (Champ and Wine not cheap)

I stayed in the Hotel du Vin in Birmingham for one night, and was immediately impressed by the styling of the hotel. They've obviously gone to a lot of trouble to create a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were polite and efficient, you'd think this was a prerequisite for a hotel but of course it doesn't happen everywhere!

The room was good, although this was once an eye hospital, and the rooms are not designed as hotel accommodation. This meant that we had a big room with some empty spaces but cramped places too, there was less than a foot between the end of the bed and the wardrobe, which made it hard to navigate, but that's a pretty small moan.

The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom with free-standing bath and million-gallon-a-minute shower was just fantastic. A flat screen TV and DVD player mean that you can get a dvd from the hotel's complimentary collection and chill out for an hour or so.

The only downside of the room I stayed in was the noise from the bar outside. The recent smoking ban means that there are a lot of people out in the street bellowing at each other but thankfully only until eleven o'clock. This was a Friday night so I guess it would be less noisy on week days.

Location wise it's in a good position to see Birmingham, right next to Snow Hill train station. There isn't a car park, but a pretty secure multi-storey which is locked overnight is a few hundred yards away, but it's worth saying that it's jam-packed on most days after 8:30 as it's the main car park for all the office goons working in the area. There's usually space on the roof but I'm not sure whether there is a lift. There are a lot of stairs! It's £13 for a 24 hour stay.

All in all it's a good hotel that I'd definitely use again.

my husband and I stayed here 14/15th March. Intention to eat drink, sleep and more sleep! we stayed in room Clos-mogador a delux double. £280 for 2 nights booked through the hotels own web site.

I expected more as we stayed in a basic double 4 years ago and thought this hotel was the best place we had ever stayed.

The room was on the 3rd floor . The decor was very dark to add the room had 3 tiny windows and dark wood furniture, so not very uplfting. The bed linen was great but the actual pillows and duvet were old. The bed felt like it tipped towards the head board. Mini bar well stocked. The fluffy towels and robes were great.

The bathroom: loved the bath, shower was fab but again the decor was very shabby the sunken lights in the ceiling were held in with what appeared to be sticky tape, The mirror and barthroom accessories and been painted AROUND. (To be honest my 12 year old could have done a better job) the grout in the glass tiled wall was dirty.

My husband and I returned to our room on the first evening and was met by a very very loud noise in the barthroom it turned out to be the barthroom fan.
I looked for the switch to turn it off , in the end I had to phone the front desk .
They informed me the fans in all the toilets were operated centrally and it would be turned of at 9pm. But they failed to tell me that it came back on at 6am.

So much for the sleep!

The TV had only 4 channels no soccer am! ( Never mind husband) as all channels were not working

To top it of paid £40 for what I thought was VALET parking for 2 nights, My car came back without a wash!

Sevice was great, Hotel bar was great , location great

Although had £50 worth of wine on our bill that we did not have. It was removed without question when I pointed it out.

Hotel du Vin Birmingham you need a make over, If you have one we will stay again otherwise its the Hyatt for us!

We had a girle weekend in the hotel and used the spa downstairs throughout the weekend. The spa seemed quite empty but was a great facility and the therapists were very good.

As there were three of us we had a studio room which was brilliant (Freixenet room) and well worth the extra. The shower truly was fantastic and everything in the room was very well thought out.

We didnt use the restauarant in the hotel , although we did find a great Indian down the road called Ashes. The cellar bar was really cosy and very busy although the staff were a little moody at times.

On the whole it was good value for money and breakfast at £13 each was reasonable for a boutique hotel.

I would definately go back to this chain of hotels.
