We stayed overnight while attending a dinner nearby. Our room was dark due to the decor, the curtains were missing hooks and looked untidy as they did not close properly, there was a stale smell in the room. The bed was very comfortable (twin beds put together at our request) and the bathroom reasonably clean (bath plughole blocked with hair ugh). The breakfast was a very generous attractive buffet with cooked options and was served promptly and efficiently in spite of the restaurant being very busy. Altogether a pleasant stay, but some housekeeping issues needing resolution.

As a treat for my wife's birthday we booked on a bed breakfast and evening meal basis at the hotel. On arrival we had been upgraded and room was fantastic . The reception staff were friendly and helpful . Within minutes my car was taken by the valet parking -hassle free. There are 2 bars one more with a pub atmosphere the other a wine/champagne bar with waitress service. Drinks are typically hotel prices but selection is wide and varied. The bistro is lovely and has a nice buzz. Even though we was on a package the full menu was open to us and the food could not be faulted. Breakfast again was excellent with very attentive staff and a good selection. If visiting Birmingham an excellent choice. You would never know you was in the old eye hospital!

Having not stayed at one of these hotels before, I was looking forward to the visit. The room was small, sparse and minimalist. I felt like I was being confined to a futuristic monastery. Loved the bed and the sheets - luxurious. But the room itself was depressing, dark and unwelcoming. The bathroom also had the feel of the one in Psycho. No films available on the TV. Liked the Nespresso machine but no edible freebies.

The lift was shaped like it had been designed for coffins and the over-arching feeling of the place is like some set for a Gothic Horror.Great smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Good gym. But I wouldn't choose to stay here.

Enjoyed service, room Villa Maria was good, very different lay out, clean, service was good. Opposite the hotel you have the country bar and couple of cafes for breakfast. Location is very good. TV could be bigger...

Stayed in this hotel on two occasions and all very pleasant. Nice, comfortable rooms and wonderful monsoon showers. Complimentary Nespresso very nice but complimentary water too would be a nice addition. In the mini bar at a " nice" price! The bubble bar is a very relaxed and comfy place to meet and have per dinner drinks. Didn't eat dinner here but breakfast was excellent on both occasions. Would recommend.

We went as a family with our 12 yo to visit the Christmas market etc on a very rainy midweek day. HdV is a favourite of ours around the country and we were not disappointed. The room was lovely and the whole place - a beautifully converted Victorian hospital was chic and funky. Dinner was, as expected, a high spot. We all thoroughly enjoyed a beautiful meal. Though very busy with pre-Christmas groups the staff coped well. Sadly our waitress was efficient but charmless and grumpy. The only real low spot was breakfast. No tables available but SEVEN were unoccupied but still had uncleared clutter. When eventually we were seated we had quite a wait to order and the waiter asked my wife ho she wanted her scrambled eggs - a nice touch. Unfortunately when they arrived they were the polar opposite of her request. Rubbery rather than just set. Why ask? A deflating end to an otherwise very good stay.

My Friend and I stayed in November and we were both very impressed by the decor and service. The staff on the desk were lovely. The service in the bar was excellent and we had a very good meal. The decor was splendid and they let us leave our cases when we checked out and could not have been more helpful.
