“Over rated and pretentious”
Reviewed January 5, 2008

On arrival the reception was not staffed. When someone did turn up they were unhelpful and charmless. My husband sat in the car as we did not know where to park and I asked for directions and was given them. I said is it far and should we unload our luggage now. He said yes. Husband came in with some luggage and again asked directions and we were given them but no offer of help with bags. When the receptionist turned up he said they could park our car for £20. Still no offer of help with bags (we had been travelling for nine days so we had a bit of luggage). The guy who parked the car was the person who had given us directions twice but did not want to carry luggage obviously. Very bad service for a hotel that presents itsef as top class.

The room is very average and the bathroom tiny, overall nothing special. Very disappointing again given how they sell themselves. Bath need to have the sealant re-done, no shelving to get your tolieteries off the floor and generally in need of a refurb.

We were on a DBB rate so went down to the bar for a pre dinner drink. A pretentious little bar with uncomfortable seating (low sofas in the back of the bar), charmless staff once more who jumped on us to get our drink order. Everytime someone left they spent minutes plumping cushions - if soft furninshings were of a quality this would not be nexcessary. We went to the pub across the road after dinner as we could not face the bar again.

In the restaurant greeted by more charmless staff (at least they're consistent). However, the food was decent. The girl who served us was efficient but no conversation at all and I suspect she was over run so not blaming her in particular. We were served desert by a different waiter who managed to conduct the transaction without speaking at all. The service has to be pretty bad for us to not tip - and we did not this time because at no point did we have any interaction with the staff, orders were taken and food delivered efficently but with no effort to engage with you as a customer.

Breakfast could have been good as the menu was appetising was cold served by staff that were, you guessed, charmless. Again no one actually spoke to us.

Said enough about their hopless staff other than when the guy (who had parked our car originally) turned up outside with our car, he handed me the keys at the front door and moved as quick as he could avoiding any offer to assist with our bags.

Overall an over rated poorly managed hotel that we won't be returning to again.

I live in brum, and my wife and I have our wedding anniversary on 24th December. Often we go away, but weren't able to this year, so just stayed at the Hotel du Vin and had our Christmas lunch there.

A stay on Christmas Eve brought an upgrade to a studio on top of a very cheap room rate (hotel nearly empty!). Furnishings are chic and modern, though the stairs to the bathroom are treacherous at night. Bed huge and comfy! But little things kept letting the place down: problems getting a mobile signal, the loo roll holder too far from the loo (and I am 6'4''), milk in the fridge off, poor control of the lighting, telly not working properly etc.

Had a lovely night in the Champagne bar, and drank some lovely stuff there. Food for Christmas was first rate, and we will go back again next year if we find ourselves stuck in Brum again for Christmas!

  • Liked — Bistro was fantastic
  • Disliked — sunken bed area in the room made getting up in the night for the toilet a serious risk!

My partner and I spent a wonderful weekend at the hotel du vin, a lovely building sympathetically converted from the old eye hospital. The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable and the bathroom fantastic with roll top bath and fabulous walk in shower. We couldn't get a table for dinner so the staff found us a table at their sister establishment, malmaison. All in all a lovely place to stay, we will be back

We stayed at this hotel on an urban spa break package - fantastic value as it included 2 nights in a double delux room; dinner both nights in the bistro (3 courses with coffee and no restrictions or supplements except drinks and side orders); breakfast both mornings; valet parking and 4 x 1 hour treatments per couple in the spa, all for £575.

Upon arrival check in was super smooth, our bags were carried for us and our car valeted away. The welcome was warm and genuine and not at all pretentious.

Our room was amazing - huge, with an enormous comfortable bed, excellent wardrobe space and an above usual fine range of complementary tea, coffee etc. with a plasma TV and DVD. The decor was simple and stylish, and perhaps the room could have done with a sofa as it was a bit minimalistic, but that's being really picky! The bathroom did not disapoint either - roll top bath that filled really quickly, the shower is a good as everyone describes it and all in a really spacious room. It's the simple things that this hotel does so well like providing 2 bathrobes, where as other (more expensive) hotels usually only provide one.

All our food in the bistro and breakfast was excellent. Saturday night was very busy and service wasn't fantastic, but the food made up for it.

The Spa area was really nice - clean and well thought through with complementary fruit and drinks in the relaxation room. All of our party of 4 had different treatments and we were all really pleased with them, and we got a complentary gift pack to take away too.

The only minor thing I could fault with our whole weekend away was that our tea and coffee and toiletries were not topped up during our stay, but there was still a suffcient range of teas to keep me happy, although I did have to be a bit more economical with the shower gel for my final drenching in the shower!

I stayed at the Hotel Du Vin for one night whilst working in Birmingham. The hotel was across the road from the office so location was perfect for me. The hotel is very close to the shops so great for those needing to be central.

The hotel used to be an eye hospital and is a very beautiful place on the inside. It has a stylish feel to it, very nice looking bar and very relaxing looking restaurant.

The room was the disappointment. My room was small and had a problem where the wardrobe door could not be fully opened as it hit the bed. This was a minor niggle that a colleague did not have. Otherwise it was an excellent place to stay and would recommend to anyone.

We booked the room fairly last minute through the hotel's own website and got a great deal that included an evening meal in the bistro and full breakfast for two. We only stayed for one night as a bit of a treat and certainly enjoyed the experience.
The website offer included a 'large' double room; however I wouldn't have described our room (L'ERMIT) as particularly large. The room had a good sized double bed, tasteful furnishings and cosy lighting. We also had a flat screen TV, DVD player and access to a lending library of films. There was also tea and coffee making facilities (with fresh milk) and a hair dryer.
The bathroom was quite compact too but did include a great bath which filled in record time and an amazing 'monsoon' shower head!
Despite there being two weddings on the day we arrived, the service was second to none and staff were friendly and helpful.
Because of a private function, the 'Bubble bar' was our only option for drinks and so was quite busy. Drinks were expensive but the service was good and atmosphere was enjoyable.
The meal in the bistro was delicious but make sure you book early to get your choice of times as we couldn't eat until quite late.
The hotel is very conveniently located for the centre of town, within walking distance of Snow Hill train station. There are other bars and restaurants within walking distance but the hotel is not in a noisy part of town.

I stayed in the Hotel du Vin for one night this week and after admiring it many times from the outside, I can now say that the inside is just as magnificent.

My room was beautiful and the rates were excellent on both laterooms.com and on the hotel's website. In the end I booked on the hotel's website because there I got a superior double room for the same price as on laterooms.com (£125) but with dinner and breakfast included in the rate - can't complain. I think that's an amazing price for a hotel of this quality, especially if there are two of you.

The breakfast was great, staff charming, bed comfortable etc but the two stand out things have to be the size of the room overall - it was massive - and the big bathroom with that amazing shower! It really is a great feature and a brilliant way to start your day! I didn't have dinner at the bistro but have been reliably informed by many friends in birmingham that their food is delicious.

All the little things are also done right - good TV and DVD player available, excellent tea and coffee making facilities incl caffietiere and Taylors of Harrogate teas and coffee (not just instant), fluffy bathrobes on hand and great toiletries in decent sized bottles.

I think this is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in and I would especially recommend it for a romantic getaway because of the charm of the hotel - high ceilings and beautiful simple decor. As for the location, I think it's much better placed to see the delights of Birmingham than other hotels on Broad Street, which can be a bit rowdy, or at the Mailbox, which is right next to a main road. It's very close to the train station and about a 5-10 minute walk to the Bullring or Mailbox for all the shops.

Who could ask for more? Not me!
