Visited Birmingham at the weekend and stayed in the Malmaison for one night. I booked the room a week in advance at a price of £100 (not including breakfast) - which in hindsight I would consider good value for the room I got. Location is great: very central and right inside the Mailbox shopping centre (the nicest part of Birmingham). Room was large and the bed very comfortable.

Negatives: Hotel staff were not very friendly. Shower was of very poor quality (although did have a bath available too). Some parts of the room looking a bit ragged and worn down. Overall, not what I would consider a 5* hotel - but very nice nonetheless and certainly amongst the best in Birmingham!

I've stayed at other Malmaison hotels and their luxury sister chain 'Hotel Du Vin', and would highly recommend them in general.

I stayed here with work and we used their.conference facilities too.
The conference room Mal 1 was either red hot or freezing.
The lunch wasn't great either.
The rooms are ok but could do with a revamp.
Breakfast was a bit.of a let down too.
And the maid was knocking on the door at 9 am.
All in all an underwhelming stay.
Not what i expected.

Reviews on here are mixed so perhaps the room you get is a bit of pot luck... I've stayed at the Newcastle one before so had fairly high hopes for this one... We stayed in room 601. Quite small, with few little "extras" they like to beam about on their website. The carpet was badly stained by the bin, the cupboards were heavily scuffed, the door to the cupboard in which the fridge was, was broken, the lamp shades were frayed and cracked, the bathroom door would not close, the sink did not drain, the shower had mouldy bits and orange tinged grouting and the loo roll was the thin and cheap kind. On top of that the bed was extremely hard and quite uncomfortable. It really seemed a world apart from the Mal in Newcastle and closer to a Holiday Inn. Even the receptionist agreed with us on check out! On a positive note, the spa was excellent and very good value.

This hotel was quiet despite being by a main road. It was a little dark but that is the boutique design, I presume. The room was spotless, bed very comfortable, towels soft. We were on the top floor so had a great view across the city. The staff were very polite and friendly. The breakfast choice was very good and the layout of the continental breakfast table was a work of art!

I stayed here for one night, mid week whilst in Birmingham for work. The hotel is beautiful, very boutiquey (very dark too!)

Bathroom - really huge and clean, excellent shower over bath, lots of hot water. Even the complimentary toileteries were good.

Towels - really white and soft, almost like brand new, as kept leaving bits of white fluff everywhere!

Bedroom - huge TV at the bottom of the bed, and some good channels on there too. Bed, huge and very high with lots of cushions - very pretty. I think the pillows and duvet were feather (ish). The air con was on (??) when I got in, so soon turned this off! The bed was very, very, very comfortable.

There are lots of tempting treats on the desk and mini bar, however these are REALLY REALLY expensive. These were covered up with the magazines to avoid temptation.

Breakfast - YUM, we had B & B on the room, so decided to make full use of the cooked brekkie - which is cooked to order, I had eggs benedict - never had it before (didn't even know what it was lol) and it was scrummie.

Lets hope I get to go to Birmingham again and stay here (especially when work is picking up the bill £90.00 for one night - eek)

First time in a Malmaison and this met my expectations of a stylish hotel which was very reasonably priced. Stayed in a deluxe twin room with a friend - we were treated to a really cool room and a very comfortable double bed each.

Well located - we never left The Mailbox setting - lunch, dinner and breakfast in the various restaurants on the doorstep. Cocktails in the Mal bar in the evening, which was nicely bustling with a bit of eye candy but not over-crowded.

We had some treatments in the spa which were great.

What's not to love?

Room Tip: Deluxe twin rooms are huge and well appointed, with a retractable screen between the beds for added...

I have stayed here before, in its hay-day! Not what it used to be but good all the same.

Fantastic location, (albeit that means you pay good rate for car park - £18!)

Breakfast was average and room was well worn. Clean, tidy and perfectly acceptable but nothing more.

Service may be an opportunity for the management team to develop.

Not a bad stay for £79 although I don't think this comes available often!!
