Had not stayed in the Birmingham Malmaison before but had good memories of staying in the Oxford hotel. Checked in no problems by a friendly guy, received our key card and went to room. Let ourselves in to discover the room was already occupied! Very embarrassing / awkward moment!!! On returning to reception a new hard faced female receptionist simply issued another room with a cocktail voucher in way of an apology. This was done with no element of surprise and looking back through other reviews has happened before. Even more stony faced & silent manager appeared and disappeared without speaking, who I guess had received a phone call from irate occupants of said room! So throughout the rest of stay I was always aware that the door could burst open at any minute! The room was very tired, dated looking and not clean. The bathroom floor dirty with lots of black hair, with rusty shower curtain rail, badly repaired and generally scruffy. Cheap nasty school type toilet paper. The air con noisy at all settings, even off! The whole place looks neglected and not in a cool designer shabby chic way. No attention to detail, even in corridors & lifts it looks dirty and worn out. The hotel needs a major refurb, wonder if / when this might happen? If not why not? It also needs to not double issue rooms!! Breakfast was instantly forgettable and staff seemed stressed. Guess if the bookings keep coming who needs repeat custom! Got a strong impression this place is trading on once being very good. It no longer is! Like hiring a car from hertz and getting a 10 year old banger with 500k on the clock that had never been cleaned or serviced and everyone had a key for! Won't be back.

Stay twice in 2012 and both times the rooms are brilliant, but I did get upgraded each time. 2nd time the room was amazing with the biggest bed possible. Bar is lively, but breakfast wasn't great and the staff looked overworked. Reception staff were OK, but not that friendly. Overall i will go back because the location is so good, however time the hotel was given a makeover.

I stopped in this hotel as Christmas present and this included a massage. The massage was the best thing about the whole hotel. The Spa is relaxing and the staff cant do enough for you so i would highly recommend a treatment. I would also say the location is another major plus but this is far as I would go.

We arrived and dropped our bags off and headed for the bar for a drink. The bar was really dark and I found it had a very poor ambience. People were dinning in the restaurant next to the bar area and I could not have ate there as you would not be able to see what you where eating.

After a couple of drinks i then went back to the room and could not believe what i found. There where multiple big dirty stains on the carpet, multiple stains on the walls and an 8inch gash on the feature wall that went through the plaster and looked terrible. We had a meal booked and did not have time to change rooms so we got ready and went for dinner.

I found the bed hard and was generally unimpressed with the cleanliness of the whole hotel. Its looked dated and is desperate need of refurbishment. The bed was overly hard and the air conditioning fan in the room kept me awake. Also car parking in the mailbox is a rip off. Find somewhere else to park if possible. All in all a not very nice stay.

Stayed at the Malmaison Xmas 2012. Car park attached to the hotel is an absolute rip of, stay 5 minutes away for 1/2 price just behind the Radisson. The rooms are a little tired now and need updating, request a room as far away from the lift and main lobby as can get loud at night times. Reception Staff were fantasic. Bar Prices are on the high side so take a bottle of gin and some tonic with you, they will empty the fridge and allow u to stock up your own stuff. breakfast food was good. location is good for mailbox shopping and reasonably close to Bullring shopping . Attention to detail has been lost a little now and trading on former days. The rooms were genuinely clean but there were a few cobwebs and dust collected on the curtains..

Room Tip: See above re rooms..

Staff very unhelpful and rude, rooms not ready at 3pm check in we had to wait in reception for one hour.
Rooms covered in stains and hand prints evident on the head board.
The location was the only positive.

Overall I thought the hotel was good value for money as I managed to get a late deal. However, as a couple we were given a twin room and had to be asked to be moved to a double. This was done quickly with little fuss. The room was spacious and clean. We ate in the restaurant and the food was very good. The service was also excellent!! We vacated the room in time for check out only to see posters in the lift advertising that if you had brunch in the hotel you were entitled to a 4.30pm check out! These posters were not up the night before and we were not told this at check-in! Would have been useful to know this beforehand as we would have taken this offer up!

We stopped for one night as part of a night out in Birmingham. The room itself was spacious, but not overly clean - bits of grit and other rubbish on the carpet. The bathroom was ok but needed some paintwork whereold paint was peeling. Breakfast the next day was truly poor. We had a cooked breakfast, paid £12 per head in advance, and were truly underwhelmed with its poor quality. Tasteless bacon, tasteless sausage and scrambled egg that was as hard and rubbery as it comes. And, to add insult to injury, both the salt and pepper grinders were filled with pepper. Just not enough attention to detail and quality to justify its Mailbox setup. Would we stop again? Not likely.
