“The Hotel That Closes At Night”

Having booked the hotel through Laterooms I arrived at 20 past midnight, having informed them I was a late arrival, I couldnt get in or have the telephone answered. I drove to another hotel, 2am arrival, no problem. I telephoned the Royal George the following morning to be told I hadnt tried to get in or phone and that they had charged me as a no show, what a hotel...!

Stayed for one night as needed to be somewhere nearby.

The staff did not know how to greet guests - I wanted to tell them how to say 'Hello, welcome' instead the guy just told me to put my credit card in the machine. It seemed that I inconvenienced him by turning up. I will never stay there again. I watched how other staff greeted guests as well - none of them had learnt the words 'Hello, how are you? Welcome' etc...

Although the rooms initially look nice and new there were problems...main ones being the double bed was two singles joined together which was uncomfortable and the shower door had fallen off the shower.

Car parking is possible but requires you driving over a curb (or kerb) and asking the hotel to open the access - so you have to park your car on the main road whilst you ask. This place is really a drinking hole for the locals which makes the atmosphere just horrible. I agree with the other comments left here.

Go to a large well known budget hotel and they will treat you correctly and be a better stay - oh, and cheaper!

Booked this last minute as there was little else available in the price range. The room was recently refurbished and it was clean and beds were comfortable.

Hotel is convenient for buses into the city centre. Location is on a main road on the edge of a semi industrial / residential area just out of the city centre.

Unfortunatly the bathroom did not seem to be properly finished, some tiles were loose and ungrouted hot water was not working on either day so very cold shower, shower door was hanging off.

Staff were friendly, if slightly un-conventional.

Arrived in evening with kids - entrance to hotel is a doorway between pub and lounge bar. Drinkers from pub were sitting inside here, smoking and swearing.
No reception desk; barman took us to room through lounge - one loud, very drunk man and broken glass on floor. Both bars seemed to be used as a local by people from the area, which is really run-down.
Hotel has obviously just been renovated, and is a nice place but definitely not the place to take a family. The decor does have a boutique hotel feel (not sure about 4 star) but we couldn't stay - it didn't feel safe.
The advertising doesn't show the whole picture.
