“average stay - rooms very hot and bathroom fan far too noisy”
Reviewed July 27, 2009

I was concerned about staying in a hotel without aircon during July, despite the fact that the UK doesn't tend to get great summers for some reason our summer nights can be very hot and given my past experiences staying in hotels without aircon they can be unbearable so don't ask me why I had forgotten this fact! The room was roasting and the main issue was that the windows didn't open more than 5 inches, we did ask for the windows to be unlocked and was told it was a no no despite the fact that we are adults we could not have the windows open - why is this? however, the hotel did give us a fan which was great but it does raise an eyebrow that this is something that they offer so do be warned that the rooms are obviously often very hot

we had a twin room and it was ok, a bit small and the deco was a bit all over the place with it's 80's off-set diagonal bits of wood against the traditional wallpaper, curtains and pictures. The bathroom was ok and had a large shower, the taps were a bit stiff and the looroll holder kept on falling down - nothing really to complain about, just annoying when the loo roll goes flying across to the other side of the room. The water in the shower was powerful and hot. There was a fan in the bathroom that was very noisy and stayed on for ages after the light was turned off, this was annoying when trying to get to sleep

Parking was ok, plenty of it but they do charge you £7 per night to park and the machine outside does not work and I was told it had not for ages but there is no note stating this - one thing to note is that they automatically charge you for parking for the duration of your stay, we only parked at the hotel for 2 of the 5 nights and they tried to charge me but I soon put them right on that one - don't know how they are supposed to know how often you have stayed there with your car.

Breakfast was good, typically help yourself continental breakfast with lots of choice and places to sit.

The staff were helpful and friendly

we stayed in this hotel for 5 nights whilst attending the NEC, it was convienient and cheap, we paid £40 per room per night including breakfast, this was ok however, I would not stay in this hotel during the summer again, it was just too hot and it does not say anywhere on it's website that the windows are restricted, it says 'windows open by guests" - not quiet sure what that means but we guests could not open the windows more than 5 inches!! - you may think that this is nothing to worry about but it was so hot in the rooms, you just wanted to kick those windows out so to get some air in the room

there was no room service so if you were there in the evening you had to go to the pub which was next door, which was ok but some times you just want to chill out and order a bit of room service - there are take away options from local pizza etc places - still not the same as just getting a bit of grub in your room

so to sum it up - good value, good breakfast, good location for what I wanted it for, too hot, rooms too small, bathroom fan too noisy, parking expensive so takes away from the cheap deal. I would stay her again but only if it was cheap and not in the summer

Good points:
- Cheap and good value
- Good for people travelling to NEC and Airport
- Price Includes breakfast
- Free toiletries when asked
- Friendly staff
- Decent Lounge Area
- Ample parking space (£7)
- Good TVs (but limited channels)

Not so Good:
- Not good if you dont have a car as it is in the middle of now where
- Far from City Centre and any shops so if you are hungry there is a pub downstairs
- Breakfast is just average: Crossoaints, bread, pies, cereals, yoghurt and juice (no egg or meat)
- Alot of twin rooms have double beds so bad news for couples
- Rooms have to be left by 12:00 pm , other places allow 2.00 pm
- No free wifi

Overall, it is an ok place to stay for one night or two. Someone staying @ the City Centre would have to pay an extraof min. £20 in similar type of hotel.

A few colleagues and I stayed at the Express Holiday Inn Birmingham NEC for a recent event we attended at the NEC.
We have stayed in several hotels in and around the NEC but for convenience, value for money, and excellent service this hotel won hands down.
With the shuttle bus to and from the train station and into the NEC complex itself this hotel is an excellent choice.
From the moment we arrived the friendly and efficient staff could not do enough for myself and my work colleagues, either booking transport, arranging places to dine etc.
This hotel for the price we paid overall was excellent value for money.

This Hotel is situated on the outskirts of the NEC, about a mile from the arenas. The room was comfortable and clean and the complimentary breakfast was good and served in an attractive dining area. There is no restaurant but it is situated next door to 'The Little Owl' pub which served very nice food which arrived quite quickly even though it was busy.
The only negative points were that my daughter said the pull out bed was very uncomfortable and there is a significant charge for parking the car. (£8 for 24hours?)

The room was clean and fit for purpose however there was only one member of staff on the desk all weekend and theer was always a huge queue. We were a group booking and one member of the group did not turn up on the first night so they cancelled their secind night without asking anyone! The staff were generally rude and unhelpful, they just said tough nothing I can do to everything! They never smiled either not pleasant to arrive to! Also heard a lot of people complaining over the weekend that they only had one set of towels in a room for two. Continental breakfast was horrible!

We were visiting the NEC for the Top Gear MPH show. Booked this hotel via ICH website and paid £60 per room for 4 rooms. The only niggles were I booked 2 standard rooms and two twins. Got 4 twins!!!
The expresses are a bit of a standard fare, don't expect a Intercontinental. Its not that close to the NEC it was a £6 cab ride. However there is a pretty reasonable pub next door to eat and drink in and the bar opened late at the hotel. Breakfast is pretty much simple, cereals, toast fruit and the like. Apart from there being evidence of a flood from the room above in the bathroom ceiling I never encountered many problems. Fine for one night but I wouldn't ant to stay there for a period of time.
All in all 7/10
