Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport
Ranked #56 of 118 Hotels in Birmingham
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Stayed here before an early morning flight from Birmingham Airport. Booked a Dinner, bed, and breakfast rate at a reasonable rate. The price also included transport to the airport, which was excellent for the price.

Firstly I would like to add all the staff I encountered were extremely helpful and polite, this included the staff on reception, in the restaurant, and the shuttle bus driver.

However the rooms were a let down. I did book a standard room, but did not receive an upgrade for being a platinum membership of their Priority Club membership.

The first room I checked into was in the basement and when I walked in, it was extremely cold and smelt really badly of mould. I then went back to reception and asked for another room, the receptionist was helpful and moved me to the 1st floor. The second room was just as cold but didn't smell. The room itself had its usual amenities, but nothing amazing. The bed itself was comfy but the duvet was small and thin, so didn't provide much protection from the freezing temperature!! They did have a portable heater which I plugged in, but took ages for it to warm up the room! The bathroom did have a slight smell of mould. Also the hotel must have an issue with its drains because the water in the sink took ages to drain.

A three course dinner was included in the price and was very good value.

Due to the early morning flight, I wasn't able to to have breakfast in the restaurant, but was able to order a breakfast tray at a specified time, which arrived on time!!

Check out was quick and the shuttle bus left on time at 5am to get me to the airport within 10 minutes!!

Thank you for writing a review about your recent stay with us. We work very hard to ensure our facilities and service are superior and we strive to be the best Holiday Inn around. We appreciate your nice comment regarding our staff.

However, It sounds like we fell below your expectations especially on the room being dated. We will look into this. We take all reviews positive and negative very seriously, and your feedback will help us improve for our next guest or your next visit.

Excellent location for airport and south Birmingham area, but that is where the good bits stop. remote location, so able to rip you off with parking (no-where else to park within walking distance). The internet service in rooms never works (ALWAYS had problems) although bar area is ok. the food is expensive, although is acceptable, and the bar prices are extremely expensive... again as remote, so captive audience. Always leave wondering why I go back, and determined not to... unless really, really have to,

It used to be that if you booked a Holiday Inn anywhere you could expect a decent standard but this place is a joke and its put me off trusting the name!
To list a few of the things that were wrong with the place:
1. A large flat screen TV was faulty and came on at midnight full volume no matter what we did to stop it - it was reported every morning but wasnt disconencted until day 5!
2. We had no water at all on the Monday morning we stayed.
3. We'd booked an important client in on the Sunday night and were very embarrassed with the no water situation.
4. We'd booked another important client into the hotel on a different night and when he let himself into the room there was already 2 ladies sitting on the bed.(wasn't extra pillows!) they'd booked the room out twice. Then we were all evacuated at breakfast due to a false alarm going off.
4. Our dinner was charged to the wrong room number.
I could go on but you get the idea - it was like staying at Faulty towers!

Room Tip: go there at your peril!

We stayed here because we have a Priority Club Credit Card and we get good service.
We also got a free upgrade to an executive room. We did not bother with dinner or breakfast so no report. We booked direct with the hotel on the Internet and paid in advance so if you don't turn up you lose you're money. But the price was only £55.00 for room only.

We were going to the Caravan Show at the N E C. So we flew into the Birmingham airport and you get a free shuttle bus to the hotel every 30 minutes, you catch this in the airport car park beside the bus stops.
So this hotel is also handy if you wish to catch the train into Birmingham for the shops.

On this occasion we had a superior room so it was great but we have stayed here before and had no complaints with the other rooms.
There is also a nice swimming pool that you are allowed to use.

I bought a groupon voucher a few months ago for this hotel. The offer was an overnight stay with breakfast, late checkout and use of leisure facilities for £40. As we regularly visit the NEC I knew I'd be able to tie it in with one of our visits. We live in Manchester and usually drive there and back the same day, so this made a nice change.

Initially when I tried to book, nobody seem to know about the offer I had purchased, but I called back a couple of days later and my booking was accepted without question. But this did give me doubts about what to expect when we arrived, also the reviews I had read werent great.

Throughout our stay all the staff were pleasant and polite. The whole hotel was clean and modern on the inside, even though the outside looks a little tired.

Our room was very comfortable, lovely plump pillows and warm duvet. Lots of convenient touches, like speakers in the bathroom, lights in the wardrobe, complimentary tea, coffee, soft drinks.

We ate in the grill restaurant, efficient staff, nice food. An enjoyable evening.

The following morning we went to use the pool for a quiet swim, but were put off because there were soapy bubbles flowing from the jacuzzi. We werent sure if it was done purposely for the kids. So instead we used the gym equipment, which was modern and clean.

Overall, we had a lovely weekend, we would defintely go back.

Having spent a while queuing at reception (only 1 staff dealing), i got a '1st floor' (which is actually basement level) room. En route to the room the corridor absolutely reeked of urine/staleness. Got to the room which was boiling hot. Quickly turned the radiator off and tried to switch air con on, but this wasn't working at all. Went to open the window and remembered that it was the basement level so left it.
Bedding smelled stale as did the towels. Bathroom smelled (again) stale with strands of hair on the floor. The tv reception was very poor with even the mainstream channels showing up all fuzzy! I was staying with a group of 10 colleagues and when we met up later and compared the state of our rooms, it was no surprise to learn that we all felt the same way about the hotel. One colleague had NO heating and NO hot water and was told there was 'a problem' with the hot water. Other colleagues all had no heating.
Restaurant said the meal would take 1hr so we all left it. Breakfast was ok.

We have stayed here twice in 2 weeks as in the area. The hotel is immaculate as are most of this chain. The rooms were superb, we had the upgrade to Executive rooms and the beds are huge. The breakfasts were lovely and plenty of choice and a right character looking after the hot food, he made us leave with a smile on our faces.

The pool is ok, no attendants there and not checked too often by the looks of it as the changing rooms needed restocking of towels and a bit of a clean but other than that it was ok.

Other than that its a good place to lay your head with some rooms having views of the airport runways but we were not interupted by any noise at all which we didn't think of at the time .

Give it a go :)
