We stayed at the Burlington Hotel weekend 23rd-26th Nov 2012, for a concert at Symphonic Hall. Despite the dread full weather the hotel was warm & cosy & welcolming so much so that we stayed an extra night and enjoyed a lovely meal in the restauraunt, with excellent friendly service from Dawn. not forgetting Therez our breakfast waitess, who was polite and greeted us warmly each morning.
Our room was clean and comfortable, the usual excellent service we have had from Macdonalds both in UK and abroad, and would recommend the Burlington so much so we have booked up for another pre -xmas break next year!

Only gripe would be no parking on site, but literally 10 mins walk to car park who have arrangement with Hotel.(Bit of a pain transporting luggage in pouring rain, as no parking outside hotel!)

This hotel wasn't as bad as we had feared having read the previous reviews. The hotel is very convenient for a shopping trip and we did get an ok room on floor 3 which was small but comfortable - forget about having a king size bed. The only major complaint was that check in was chaotic to say the least having been allocated a room three times - following a request to agent and front desk twice !! We wanted a room overlooking the christmas market - it wasn't worth it. Room 338 did overlook New Street but had a very small window. Breakfast was nice and that's about it.

Room Tip: The bigger rooms are at the back but presumably with no views...?

Have visited the hotel for business meetings many times before but this was the first time I had stayed. Whilst the bedroom at first looked luxurious closer examination showed its age and wear. Gaps between painted timber frames and tiles in bathroom for instance. Decided to have a pint before dinner but found my choice was limited to one type of lager with no bitter. The restaurant menu was very limited and seemed to be the same as the room service menu so ordered from my room. The meal took 55 minutes to arrive. One great benefit however was that it is only minutes from New Street Station.

We first stayed here last year, room only and had no complaints. However on this visit we were left disappointed. We booked B&B and evening meal for an anniversary celebration/shopping trip. We arrived at 2:15pm to be told our room was not ready and would be another half hour. We had booked a classic suit which turned out to be very nice apart from the bath panel was completely adrift and the room was cold with no heating on. The other off-putting thing was that the previous occupants room service tray was still outside our door as was several other rooms. Not really inviting, seeing other peoples dirty plates piled up outside your room! They were still there when we went out at 7pm. There was only one bath robe and one set of towels, although there was a spare bath robe belt left over the adjoining door, (no doubt a result of the hasty room preparation!). The evening meal was also a let-down. I expected to get a 3 course ala carte meal and only be expected to pay for drinks. However we were told that there was a limit of £25.00 per head. This is not what I expect from a 4 star hotel and found it somewhat embarrassing considering this was an anniversary meal out. We decided to forgo dessert as costs were escalating as the menu is a little sparse unless you order steak. And to be honest the quality was not as described in the adverts. We sat by the window over-looking the German market, but found it too cold as there was no heating on what-so-ever. We moved to a table in the centre of the room where at least we were away from the drafty windows. Luckily we had a choice as there was only 3 other couples in there, (I wonder why?). We returned to our room about 10:30pm to find it still cold with the radiators barely luke warm and got into bed to warm up. 12;30pm and all hell broke loose! We were woken by the blaring fire alarm. We managed to find our way down 4 flights of stairs, (confused with no staff to guide us until we reached reception!) to be told it was a false alarm. We got back to bed to relax, but were again treated to the unbearable shrill of the alarm two more times during the next 30 minutes. At least the heating had now started working, (or was there another heat source?...). Not exactly a warm relaxing night at the Burlington! Obviously false alarms can't be helped and we were only too glad that there was no fire, but there were no staff on hand to guide us and no apology from anyone the next day. Oh well at least we could have a nice bath before checking out. Afraid not, as there was no hot water as it needed "re-setting" according to the receptionist. By the time it was done we had run out of time. The breakfast tasted very good, but was marred by poor service from seemingly badly trained staff with little experience and too much to do due to understaffing. Again, when we complained no one had taken our order or we had no butter or the wrong toast, we were met with a scowl and short reply with no apology. Not what I expect from a quality hotel! To conclude, The Burlington is a nice old world hotel with lots of character, but it was spoilt by all of the above which may seem trivial, but point to financial cut backs with insufficient quality rated staff to cover maintenance, House Keeping and general services. Unless this improves I see this hotel not surviving which would be a great loss. What makes a good 4 star hotel? 4 Star service! Unfortunately this tuned out to be a memorable experience for all the wrong reasons. I expected a quality stay to impress my partner on our anniversary which is why I went for 4 stars. The Burlington failed to deliver!

We were at an event at the NEC and rather than stay around there, decided to stay close to New Street station and travel in on the train. You couldn't get any closer to the station. We got a good deal from one of the booking agencies and this made it affordable. You would not want to pay the rack rate!

Our room was a standard double. The size was adequate, it was comfortable with 2 armchairs and a large flat screen TV. Very clean. No view at all, just overlooking the exhausts from the extractors and air con units. This meant that there was a constant smell of charring meat in the room, even with the windows closed, although you got used to it pretty quickly. The room had numerous original features in the room, which is a nice touch. The bathroom was large and everything worked as it should, although the thermostat for the shower was hanging off.

Service is good - which is the case in other MacDonald hotels I've stayed in. The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming. Breakfast, at £10 a head, was too expensive.
It is clear that the hotel has been refurbished, probably many times. Some nice features remain, like stained glass and a large feature main staircase. Some of the detail is tatty, such as skirting boards that in places are very rough and the colour scheme is very corporate hotel (that indescribable shade of cream, pink and brown). The floors are also noisy, with creaking and uneven boards in places under the (thick) carpets.

However, location is about perfect, it is comfortable and quiet and although not stunningly good value, it is more than adequate for a city centre hotel with a bit of character for a few nights.
I have stayed here in the past under different ownership and it has improved. Having stayed in many of the city centre hotels in Birmingham, this is one of the better places. Not as modern as some, but much more of a human touch.

Room Tip: 3rd floor on the inside of the block is just above the AC units, best avoided. Rooms overlooking New...

The service and cuisine and the Burlington hotel was perfect
The room was very spacious
The location is just where you would want it and there wasn't any outside traffic noises which was great!

I especially want to mention Richard on reception and the night porter Justin
They made our stay worth while
Great staff, great service, great stay

The hotel probably was great about 20 years ago - the staff say refurbishment has started, however the rooms I've stayed in were not great. Its very tired, old fashioned and needs gutting.

On this trip I had a room overlooking New Street, which was loads better than last time when my room was over looking the air con units. On first glance of the room, it looked better and had a huge bathroom.

The floors are undulating and creak constantly where ever you walk, There were big cracks in the ceiling and staining from a leak. Air con very noisy and had to turn it off.

When you start to look around .....net curtains on the windows are black, black mold around the windows, personal hairs and marks in the bath, not hot water in sink taps, food and drink stains on walls along with plaster and chunks of paint that have been slopped around. The bed linen was clean but had some dark stain on the pillow cases, they should be thrown away. Outside, which is not the hotels fault, you get to hear all the drunks and the street cleaners who started at 5am. Although there is no sound proofing so you hear every conversation taking place in the hallway. There are also holes int he tired furnishing - only good thing was the new tv.

When I checked in I asked how to order continental breakfast - told card in room - you guessed it - no card in room, ordered room service asked for a card never got it it and gave up. Room service was cold and overpriced.

Then to top it of,f noticed the bins hadn't been emptied from the previous occupants. Yuk!. Telephones in room are yellow with age and had food stuck on them.

Ok sorry to be having a big moan but when you are using hotels on business after a long day I don't need anything fancy just a clean room and a good nights sleep. Neither I got here.

If you like decor that your Nan would appreciate, this is the hotel for you. Hotel staff say that its not their usual standard, but come on, it was poor last time I had to stay here.

One a positive note after my rant - the staff here are great, all generally local people and are very nice, polite etc - so Macdonald great staff, crap rooms - think on that

Room Tip: Plenty of other hotels of better quality in the area
