Fascinating and well worth a visit. We wondered around the Jewellery Quarter which is like a little village of its own before we went into the Museum. So much to see.

The jewellery quarter of Birmingham, Hockley, is a wonderful demonstration of the skills and craftsmanship being kept alive by skilled, enthusiastic dedicated people.
The area, to the west of the city, is easily reached either by car or by train from the city centre.
The hub of Hockley is a beautiful clock at the crossroads at the corner of Warstone lane, and the streets radiating out have fascinating shops, tiny restaurants, and a number of anonymous, well guarded workshops where the precious metals and gemstones are worked.
This is an area where true craftsmanship comes into its own, every shop sells different products, from fine jewels to affordable pieces for all. Each has its speciality, and a sign of the times is shown by the many boards displaying the day's bullion prices.
A wonderful introduction to the jewellers skill is on display at the Jewellery Museum, in Vyse street. This small workshop has been preserved exactly as it was when the owners shut up shop many years ago. The tools, the moulds, the products, the processes are all there to see, and the skills of the craftsmen are soon made apparent. Demonstrations are held of jewellery making, and the kindly guides explain as you go through the warren like series of workshops. The tour, for small groups takes about an hour, and entrance is free.
. It is hard to resist making a purchase in Hockley, but whatever you buy, this is never tourist souvenir quality, but the real thing, an item to treasure.

This is a fascinating snap shot of history, with a very well-led tour by expert guides of an old jewellery factory right in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter. Knowledgeable guides take you on a tour through the history of jewellery making in Birmingham, and there's a lovely little café for a cuppa and slice of cake afterwards!

This is an excellent museum to visit. If you are unsure of where the museum is, the Big Brum Buz passes it on tour and you are able to hop off/on close by. A visitor learns a huge amount about the industry and the real people who worked in the building that it is situated in. The staff were very friendly and the guide knowledgeable and interesting. There are many exhibits but it is the tour that was the best part, for us anyway. There is a small shop selling lovely pieces; a small cafe where you can sit and enjoy a cuppa and something to eat; and toilets. There is a lift for seeing the museum exhibits but you need to be able to manage stairs to take the tour. There is a fee but it is well worth it.

What a great museum! It's fascinating to get an inside into the real lives of workers and to see how the sort of ordinary jewelry most people would have is made. The tour guide was fantastic and dynamic; he managed to convey lots of information while keeping the group moving and interested.

We spent parts of two days walking around the Jewelry Quarter and never felt unsafe in any way. It was very interesting to wander among the streets and notice buildings of different ages, relics of the trade that thrived for several centuries, and to see how they're being re-used now. There are a few shops selling artist-made craft-type jewelry in the Quarter (along with some standard engagement-ring and miscellaneous jewelry shops); it's just too bad that there are no longer any actual jewelry manufacturing businesses in Birmingham of the type exemplified by the Jewellery Museum.
