“Good for a night”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

Stayed here on business mid-week. Nice hotel, clearly Interior Designers were heavily involved, very design centric and quite cool overall, funky purplish lighting. One real let down was the bathroom. Its one of those with an all-in-one bathroom, shower area is part of toilet area, etc. After a shower, the entire bathroom gets soaked!

Location isn't too far out from the CBD area of Birmingham, about a 15 minute walk and in an area that was more industrial.

Our 'superior' (with window) room is tiny but effectively planned and I absolutely love it. The shower is two lovely showers in one, the wet room concept works well for us, the AC keeps the room comfortable, the hotel is convenient for dinner and the jewellery quarter - and all for £63. Love it!

Stayed the night after seeing Michael McIntyre at the NIA which was about 10-15 mins walk along a pretty canal. The room was funky and modern and did exactly what it said on the tin! The bed was massive and the rain shower was heaven. People say that the rooms are small which they are but not overly small .... but what more do you need other than a bed and a shower!? It was also a bit strange with no window because waking up at 9am the room still looked like it was midnight which was a tad funny but the lighting system meant you could set a light glow behind the false blind to make it appear light outside, ... A very cool touch!
I must say a huge thank you to the night porters, Mat and Alex. Having arrived a little worse for wear after our night out and having not found any greasy spoon for chippies on our way home, the guys phoned up a local takeaway and got them to deliver food to the hotel. They also got us a round of teas and coffees which was very nice of them! Top guys!
A note on the parking... If I hadn't have phoned to check the day before I wouldn't have known that there is a local NCP (B3 1SW) where you can park and get heavily discounted rates. It was fab... Should have been £16 for 24 hours but the discount card brought it down to £3.50!!!! Absolute bargain for central city parking! Just a shame it wasn't clearer that the facility was available because we probably would have parked elsewhere and been a bit peeved at paying a massive parking charge.
I did also see someone one here mention about the lighting not being very good for putting makeup on... I totally agree with this, I ended up half standing in the corridor trying to use normal light! But hey ho, it was all fun and games :D
Would definitely stay here again, lovely modern hotel so close to the hub-bub of pubs and restaurants around the NIA :)

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room next to the other room I booked for my brother. The put us on a small quiet...

Good to hear you enjoyed the hotel and that you thought it was great value. Also may I thank you for the kind mention of two of our night team members. It's always so nice to hear our team members praised on their customer service. More often than not people are too quick to comment on the negative.
Your booking was made through a third party website where I have checked to see what is said regarding car parking. It states 'Public parking is possible at a location nearby (reservation is not possible) and charges are applicable'. Unfortunately on some third party websites our hands are tied in regards of what we can say and on this occasion we had to select our closest match from a drop down list. The hotel is only too happy to help should you have any queries regarding future bookings.

I'd read the reviews and the website, so knew what to expect in terms of hotel concept and room size/style. The only real downside for me with the concept was the lack of a decent desk for working, but otherwise I "got" it. I applaud anyone for trying something different and I really wanted to like it, but in the end it was run of the mill hotel basics that let it down, specifically:

- Noise. Doors slamming and people talking in the corridors. The door to the room doesn't seem to filter out any of it. Goodness only knows what it's like having a room next to the vending machine. Also, if you're unlucky enough to have a room directly over the hotel entrance, the sliding door sounds like a tube train trundling under the hotel... again and again and again.

- Housekeeping. Previous occupant's dirty socks under the bedside table? No thanks. Greasy hair marks on the headboard? Eurgh.

- WiFi. Big thumbs-up for it being free. However it ranged from slow to completely unavailable during my stay, effectivley rendering it useless. Unfortunately, this was a huge inconvenience for me due to work commitments. It was better very late at night and early in the morning, suggesting that there's some kind of capacity issue at busier times. This alone would be enough for me to avoid the hotel.

- TV remote. Having nothing except channel +/- and volume is pretty useless for a TV with multiple freeview channels; that's a lot of scrolling up and down through channels! Maybe someone nicked the original - in which case a proper replacement is needed with a menu / TV guide.

Some or all of these things are fixable; if not here then in Bloc's next hotel. I really hope they are, because there's room in the market for this concept. However style and design alone won't be enough to carry it through.

Thank you for your constructive review. In response to your comments:

Noise - The hotel has been fitted with sound deafening pads both in the corridors, on the ceilings of the corridors and at the bottom of the vending machines. We continuously review our noise reduction strategy and have recently had further studies carried out. The results of which I am sure will further help us to reduce corridor to bedroom sound propagation and clearly demonstrate our dedication to improve our product continuously.

Housekeeping - We will pick this up with the Housekeeping Team to find out how our usually very high standard was compromised in this instance. Should this have been brought to the Reception Teams attention they would have room moved you as this is not acceptable as a Bloc standard.

Wifi - We have 4 lines into the hotel specifically to fulfil the needs of our customers, however we are not monitoring the customers that maybe streaming movies for example which affect our bandwidth availability. We are looking at a more robust infrastructure in the future and in implementing bandwidth restriction to better distribute availability.

TV Remote - This has not been a problem in the past however I believe you have a made a very valued comment. We will make sure that in the future customers are fully aware that a full remote control is available from reception should they require one.

We take all comments good or bad onboard so as to make sure that both our existing and future hotels constantly evolve to offer the best possible customer experience.

No natural ventilation, not even a window. As far as I am aware you can't keep murderers and animals in those conditions. Had I been told that there would be no window and no natural light I would never have stayed. I am really surprised they were even given planning permission. The rooms are tiny boxes, no parking, the free internet is uselesst. That I can seal with but no light or ventilation is pretty poor. I don't want to breathe in other peoples dead skin.

Do yourself a massive favour and stay somewhere else. Unless of course you like cages.

I am really quite angry about this hotel because nothing promised was delivered...

I comwplained along with another guest and we might as well been doing it in the nude, they couldn't have cared less.

Disgrace!!!

Thank you for your constructive review. We appreciate that Bloc Hotel may not cater for everybody's needs, however from past reviews people have understood the concept and generally liked the product. We make it no secret that we have two room types available at Bloc Hotel, a room with a window or a room without a window. All rooms have climate control which can be adjusted accordingly. We have found that sometimes if rooms have been booked via a third party they do not pass the information on or indeed the confirmation that confirms what has been booked for the client. The hotel does not have it's own car park however there are two choices available for guests. On street parking is available in the pay and display spaces on Caroline Street which is free between the hours of 6pm and 8am and metered thereafter or hotel guests can park in the local NCP car park which is £3.50 for 24hrs instead of £14.50 - amazing value for city centre parking!
I would be delighted to know what was promised and not delivered so this can be followed up with the hotel. Once again, thank you for taking the time to write your review.

THe Bloc hotel is not a bad hotel - but it's not a boutique hotel so don't go expecting that. It is what it says on the tin - a nice budgetish hotel in the Jewellery Quarter.

The rooms are teeny tiny - a bed pushed up to the window, a small bathroom/wetroom and.. that's about it.
My husband and I stayed there while going to a friend's birthday party so it was fine for a one-night stop over.
The room was freezing when we arrived (there is a good air con system but it did take a while to warm up!) and we had to dance around each other to get ready. The lighting was a nightmare trying to do make up in!

So that's the negatives out of the way.
The positives? The bed was very long and very comfortable. We weren't paying over the odds for things like tea and coffee and a desk and so on, which we didn't need.
The "monsoon" shower was excellent, and there were fun light settings to play with. Everything felt like it was good qualioty from the furnishings to the TV.

There was also an ironing room on the ground floor which was useful too.

Being so small, I would have hated it for longer than one night. But for a quick stopover in the jewellery quarter Brum it's fine. If you want to be in the city centre, you can get a similar price or only slightly more at the numerous hotels there on last minute etc.

We previously stayed at the Ramada Encore (other side of the centre) for a similar price and the rooms were larger, good views, more "hotel facilities" eg a restaurant, tea and coffee, toilettries etc.

we have just got back from spending two nights at Bloc Hotel.
We chose to stay here after searching for a hotel near to where we needed to be. We arrived late on the first night to a very friendly man who checked us in and explained where the vending machines etc were which was nice.

First impression of the room was good- small but well appointed. The bed was SO comfy- it surprised me how comfy it was! We slept extremely well both nights as we were comfy and the room was lovely and dark.
The TV was great and it was a great use of space having it in the wall at the end of the bed. Cool lighting and it was room was cleaned well for us on our return in the evening.
The bathroom was cleverly designed to be a wet room which was good use of the space. I tried both the normal shower (which was amazing- very powerful) and then realised there was a rainforest shower above me....that was BLISS! I could have stood under it for ages!

There isnt much space to put your stuff, no hair dryer and not having a window would have maybe bothered us if were wanting to spend much time in our room/stay longer but again we knew those things at the time of booking and its the perfect stop over.

Not much else to say.....great price, comfy bed, everything we could have needed and would definitely stay again when in Birmingham

Room Tip: choose a room with a window if staying longer than a couple of nights
