“funky modern and v v comfortable”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

This is a modern pod style hotel. £45 for one of the most comfortable nights we've had in a hotel. Its a new hotel and clean and spotless. The towels were big and soft and the mattress wonderfully comfortable. No frills but you can get decent coffee and snacks from vending machines if needed. Well positioned just outside city centre between St Pauls Sq and the jewelery quarter and with secure parking nearby. And with a pass from the Bloc the 24hr charge miraculously drops from nearly £15 to just £3.50. Ideal if like us you want to do the shops the day after a night out. The bathroom 'module' is a wet room so you need to think what order to do things in and make sure the shower is pointing at the WC but quite frankly it adds to the funkiness of the hotel. Would highly recommend for a cheap yet smart quiet stay just out of the city centre but in good walking distance (about 10mins).

Room Tip: not all rooms have a window (dummy windows). We found this a bonus as its quieter and dark but you...

This really isn't bad considering. It's cheap and does what you would expect. It's clean and efficient. As long as you don't want to spend too much time in your room (room? Surely cabin) then you'll be fine. Also don't expect you'll be able to have a party in there. Or use the bathroom in privacy. The staff were very friendly. Free wifi is a plus.

A word of warning: a friend staying here parked outside on the street and had his car vandalised. Perhaps look at putting the car in a garage.

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that your friends car got vandalised whilst parked on the street. Guests have two options regarding car parking. The hotel has a deal set up with the NCP car park on St Paul's Square. Currently the charge is £3.50 instead of £14.50 for 24hrs. This is a 3 minute walk from the hotel. There is also on street parking which is free after 6pm up until 8am then it is metered. It is also free all day Sunday.

As other reviews have mentioned, the rooms are small/cramped with limited space, only just managed with 2 rather large backpacks.

BUT they are spotlessly clean, in a great location, had a great view from the window and was good value for money.

As described by others, water goes everywhere in the bathroom but I didn't have a problem with that. The water pressure & temperature made up for that. Ohh and the huge bath towels!

We would most certainly be back.

Don't forget to ask for the discount for the car parking facilities just down the road - super cheap and better then the uncovered & less secure parking next door.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like staying in such a small room, but actually it was the perfect size!

Very comfy double bed, small desk (enough for a laptop) and free wi-fi, small-but-perfectly-formed shower/toilet wetroom.

The room was immaculate, and beautifully finished. All the fittings were of a high standard. Certainly a lot of thought has gone into making this work, and it works perfectly.

It's a cab ride into the city centre, or a 10-15 minute walk.

Room Tip: Fiver extra for a window, but for an overnight stay I was happy without a window. If I were staying...

Room was bijou but perfectly fine for our needs. Comfortable big bed, clean room. Black out blind helped with light. Overall i think worth considering because i have stayed for similar price in Copthorne (4star ahem?!) Birmingham and it was horrible compared to the Bloc.If the noise issue is dealt with then i would recommend this hotel for a chic budget stay.

Our main gripe was the LOUD cleaning staff at a really early hour at the weekend- no consideration for guests with loud banging and raised voices- TRAINING POINT FOR MANAGEMENT.

PROs
Stylish decor.
Very Clean.
Good shower (but as its a wet room so be warned everything gets wet).
Comfortable bed.
Nice area. 10-15minute walk into city centre but not in the city centre which was a plus.We walked from train station easily.
Reasonable price for basic stay

CONS
NOISE! heard everything from corridor including guests moving in the next room, guests coming back at 2-4am and Housekeeping staff shouting outside our room at 7am on a weekend. NOT GOOD!
Limited facilities (but we knew this at booking/ price so can't complain)
Nowhere near to get fresh coffee or breakfast nearby.
WIFI codes didn't work & with no phone to call reception from room so i didn't fix this- after a long journey i was disinclined to schlep downstairs.

TIPs
Award winning curry Lasan (from f-word) around the corner but is expensive, i suggest walking 5more minutes where we ate Itihass for much less.

Room Tip: Avoid staying near the stairs or cleaning cupboard. Ask for a quiet room.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and thank you for your kind comments.
I apologise that you experienced noise during your stay. It's mentioned that some of the noise was from Housekeeping staff at 7am? Our housekeeping staff start work Sat-Sun 9am and Mon-Fri 8am so I can only apologise should you have received noise from other hotel guests.

What a fabulous hotel - seamlessly run yes its basic but it has absoilutely everything you need rooms are compact and cosy yes perfectly functional. Spotlessly clean and compact. Modern stylish and just superbly appointed. A ten minute walk from the Bullring and similalry from the NIA.
Location in St Pauls is beautiful as you walk down the road ffrom the hotel into the square coffee shops, pubs restaurants.
A window would have been nice in the room as the heating seemed to be running on full pelt all night.
Also they dont promote the deal with the NCP that allows you 24 hours parking for £3.50 which is a bargain.

I would hearltily recomend this hotel and a special mention to the wonderful young lady on reception who could not do enough for us, I just feel really mean that I did not get the young lady's name 10/10 for customer service and your help with the map!

Thank you for your review. Working for Bloc Hotel I tend to be quite biased in terms of thinking that we have a great product that we are able to sell to customers. It's so nice to read all the reviews and proves that others agree. I would also like to thank you for your comments on the young lady who you spoke with during your stay. I will endeavour to pass on your thanks!

I used to live in Birmingham so know the city well, however had never heard of this hotel. A group of 6 of us left booking a hotel quite late and this was the only hotel under £100 we could find in the city centre, but we weren't disappointed - what a great hotel! Great location, just off St Pauls Square in the Jewellery Quarter (2mins walk to restaurants and the Jam House, and 10mins to the Bull Ring), and although the rooms are small they are perfectly formed, with clever use of space and lighting and are very comfortable for a one or two night stay. (We actually had rooms without windows, but wasn't an issue due to clever design). I'd stay again, and recommend this hotel -it's luxury on a budget! I hope the chain expands throughout the country!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Bloc hotel is located in Birminghams Jewellery Quarter. The village atmosphere created by its cafes-bars and restaurants is complemented by the business-shopping-arts and sports facilities that are also on its doorstep. We have taken loose inspiration from Japanese pod style hotels which means much larger rooms more akin to a cabin on a luxury yacht with finishes and fittings to match. The rooms are equipped with a King Size Double Bed-luxurious linen-climate control-wet room with monsoon drench shower-Samsung 32inch led flat screen TV and high speed WIFI. Birmingham is of course a centrally located travel hub and for many of our visitors that will be the most important factor in just how quickly and conveniently they can access the motorway network-national rail and international flights. ... more   less
