“Best in the area”

My mate's wedding party were staying here and they told me the rate (£70) and I was visiting and was impressed. Good sized rooms and good staff - I spent most of my weekend here, because the place I was staying in was so rotten. It eclipses totally the AWFUL Middleton Hall Hotel (where I was staying) a few miles away, which was a staggering £60 a night in a dingy, woodchipped, falling apart, shower barely spitting room with a miserable excuse for an owner. The website says £50 a night - don't be deceived. Go to the Westmead. It may be a little ordinary, but you won't be left with a bad taste in your mouth.

We often stay in the Midlands to see family, and have used a number of inadequate hotels. Such a relief to stay at The Westmead! The staff were friendly, and our room was spacious and clean. Every small detail had been thought of, and athough it couldn't be described as 'luxury', it is certainly a gem, for the price, in that part of the world.

We arrived on a Saturday to find a wedding party in full swing, and expected to be kept awake all night. However, our room was in a different wing, and we slept like babies, with no interruption. The only slightly unpleasant factor was that, when returning to the hotel late evening after a meal with relatives, the stench of spilt beer from the party lounge was overpowering. However, not a trace of it next morning, and we were served an excellent full English breakfast - one of the best I've had for a long time.

So, lots of Brownie points for the Westmead. We will certainly use it again.

I had fairly high hopes for The Westmead having read the reviews. Sadly, the hotel experienced a lot of problems with the power on one of the nights that we were there, not something that you can do much about and maintenence did a good job in trying to resolve the problem. We ate in the restaurant one night and in the bar the next. The pasta dishes were both pricey and bland, the restaurant lacked any atmosphere and why sit people right next to the kitchen entrance when there were nicer tables unoccupied? We had guests so we didn't make a fuss. The bar meal was disappointing, our sour cream for the very small portion of nachos ( supposed to be enough for two to share as a "light bite"? - I don't think so) arrived and turned out to be mayo and when the waitress eventually brought some cream, that turned out to be double cream. Nice if we were having scones and jam but not with salsa and spicey beef.
When the power went one one occassion (one of many), a poor couple were left by staff to eat their meal in complete darkness, nobody even bothered to bring even a tealight to put on their table. I nabbed one off the bar and gave it to them as we left.
The room was nice, very warm and tea/coffee making facilities were in place. The safe was easy to use and an iron was there if we had needed one. I would have preferred a towel without a great tear in it but that was replaced the second day.
Unfortunately the lights failed in our room on our last morning but the sockets worked so a lamp was brought to the room for us. Housekeeping and reception staff were very helpful, I felt sorry that they were probably going to get some stick for something that was totally beyond their control.
There was a wedding party on during our second evening, the guests that smoked clogged the hotel entrance and we had to run the gauntlet of thick cigarette smoke when we wanted to leave or re-enter the hotel. Not very nice . The mess from the disgarded cigarette ends all over the entrance steps the following morning made me feel quite ill.
Good value for money for accommodation if you need to be on the outskirts of either Birmingham or Redditch but take a torch and eat elsewhere. Becketts Farm is ideal for breakfast.

  • Liked — Huge bed, tea/coffee making facilities and cosy warm
  • Disliked — Smokers blocking entrance
