“Great location, hotel is mediocre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2008

We have stayed at this property numerous times when visting Birmingham.

If you're just in town for a football match or concert/event then you can't beat the Britannia for location. It's right on New Street which has all major shopping outlets, cinemas etc and is right opposite the entrance for the main train station which you can use for connecting with pretty much anywhere in the UK.

The rooms are very dated so don't expect luxury but if you get a good price and aren't fussy then they do a fine job and are usually offer a comfortable night's sleep once you settle in.

You'll either love or hate it's old quirky charm.

This hotel is distinctly average. The room and breakfast were okay, but for the price we paid it was fine. No complaints but I wouldn't stay again. The best thing is the location, great for a shopping trip.

Arrived at the hotel about 11:30 am and told only smoking rooms were available, but the helpful staff did allocate us a room which they decribed as nice, but said ready about 2pm. No probs as the reason for the stay was to attend a wedding at the cathedral. Dropped off bags, went upstairs to use the toilet and first thing I noticed about the bar area, it had an offensive smell, the girlfriend didn't notice it, so I wasn't looking forward to answering nature. To be fair, the toilets I found to be well maintened and clean but the hand drier weak. Came back a couple of hours later and this time the smell was in the lobby, exact same smell, I am just guessing it may have something to do with the cleaning they use and leave a terrible smell, wonder if it could be furniture polish as the decor in the public areas was not that bad in all honesty. The room, well, furniture old and tired, not too keen on the green coloured wallpaper BUT it was novel having a balcony, so got to compliment the staff in allocating that room for us. The balcony door wouldn't lock or close properly, would hate it in the middle of winter, but in nice weather this would not cause an issue at all. The view was not too bad, really nice to go out on the balcony and watch the tree laden street below and opposite the room was not another high rise building which is what I was expecting. No smell in the room, it was average, size ok so no other comments regarding the room. Location, couldn't have been any better, a few minutes walk from New street train station, about 5 mintues walk from the cathedral and enough places to eat and drink dotted within a few minutes walk. Middle of all the shops also. Staff were friendly enough and what I asked of them they helped with no qualms, just a shame the hotel itself didn't compliment the staff. Breakfast, nothing special, buffet, sausages were just the massed produced stuff and tasted it, but the bacon, mushrooms and egg were nice, even made a nice change having fried bread as a selection which I have not seen elsewhere. Fresh fruit selection was poor as I like to finish with yoghurt and fruit, so just sprinkled some cereal on. Tomatoes were a bit dry, but enough juices to choose from. In a nutshell, I would not stay here if I could try an alternative at a similar price, but as a last resort for a night's stay I would consider. Thinking more about the smell in the public areas, I think it was furniture polish the more I remember it. Not a hotel to go and plan a great weekend, I travelled with the girlfriend to attend a wedding, but I could only recommend this hotel for a place to lay your head if you do not plan to spend a lot of time in the building and nothing else really. The balcony room is probably a room worth asking for if you arrive in good time, but wouldn't really pay extra as the decor is lets say, tired.

  • Liked — Given the balcony room without asking for it.
  • Disliked — The offensive smell in the bar and lobby areas.

Arrived in the pouring rain to be greeted by a very stiff revolving door, ever tried getting through with a case! Bedroom 406. Upack case where do we hang our cloths? Ah there's the wardrobe just have to move the bed to get to it, now it needs cleaning before we can put any clothes in it, look at the floor where we moved the bed, filthy,Now we have moved the bed the headboard is attatched to the wall so the pillow falls off the bed, bed has springs coming through & dips in the middle. Bathroom just doesn't look clean, toilet seat has dirty finger marks on it,It is cold in the room as the metal window doesn't shut properly, No where to hang wet coats or towels can only assume you hang them on the floor. There had been trouble with the light, the writing was still on it! Breakfast ok & dinner, Next day no rolls & buttter, run out, only ever had rolls & butter the first day, never arrived had to beg for bread to go with the soup, run out of food at dinner time, poor chef was doing his best, he really needed some help. G;lad to get home , now have a bad back due to the bed going to the doctors tomorrow. What a place to stay.

Having read previous reviews I was terrified. But you really get what you pay for. The room size is okay, but instead of twin bedroom we were given double... You can move the beds a bit apart. Furniture is very old and worn. Bathroom small and not very clean. The window doesn't seal. Breakfast really swims in a pool of grease, but you can choose cereals. No problems with the staff.

Rating is really between 2 and 3 . We booked this hotel through lastminute.com and had not read these reports first! We immediately regretted our decision but were too late to cancel on line. As a contingency plan we printed off a range of alternative hotels and left our luggage in the car when we made our 'exploratory' visit. We were prepared for the worst and in some areas we found as reported. The exterior facade and entrance are hardly welcoming and the decor dingy at best. However, we did see decorators in overalls and assume that, unlike the Fourth Bridge the promised refurbishment / redecoration programme will be completed one day! We were welcomed on arrival at reception, and no, they had no record of our reservation either! However, we asked to view the room before committing ourselves to staying and were met by a housekeeper who showed us three rooms and offered others if we required to see them. Based on comments made on this site, between us we inspected the mattresses, bed linen, windows for drafts / damage, and bath fittings. Yes, the TV was fairly antiquated but this was not a priority. We selected a room on floor 6 overlooking New Street. It had a large balcony window, plenty of natural light, quiet a night and heating was working. We would not have wanted an internal room which was particularly dark. Breakfast was adequate. We were given hot, fresh toast on request. The cooked food was uninspiring but alternatives gave an adequate breakfast. For £50.00 per night double room including breakfast and a bottle of wine, this represented fair value for money. It would have been easy to pay and awful lot more for not a lot more in central Birmingham. The position is a bonus with the Symphony Hall, Mail Box and Bull Ring all in easy walking distance. Would we return to teh Brittania? Certainly if we are seeking accommodation in central Birmingham we would check the prices. There is a certain intrigue value in returning if only to see if there has been any further progress with the redecoration/ refurbishment plans!

  • Liked — Value for money in excellent central position
  • Disliked — General ambience / decor was lacking
