I booked the hotel as it was so cheap and so close to New Street rail station. It's a little old fashioned, but I found it warm, comfortable and functional. Unfortunately I was on a work course for a few days and had booked a single room in here for 2 nights. the walls are paper thin. If you like to go to bed early, don't stay here, or take ear plugs. If not you are forced to listen to tvs on either side of your room, light switches being turned on and off, and revellers. I didn't eat in the hotel as there are so many eateries close by, including for breakfast.
Having said all that, if you are having a w/e in Birmingham with your friends then it's a great venue. A couple of minutes from the train station, in the midst of great shopping, restaurants and nightlife, and it's really cheap.
I didn't have any problem with the staff or with checking in or out.More
