“A lovely escape”
Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

I often visit art galleries and museums, paying extortionate prices for entry to see exhibitions which lack quality....
I'm from Birmingham but rarely do I find the time to explore what my own city had to offer, but after escaping the rain and the hoards of shoppers on a busy December day I have set myself a new resolution.
The museum itself is home to a host of collections, from Egyptians and beyond, with a fantastic section about the history of Birmingham too. Some of the things I remembered from my childhood, but there is constant variety in the exhibitions. It links to the gas hall where there are a range of art exhibitions throughout the year for an additional fee. I would recommend that brummies and visitors alike should visit this museum, and pausing in the cafe was almost like stepping back in time... A better experience than being rushed in Starbucks!!

“Magnificent pre-raphaelites - and great general collection”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

A great monument to the Victorian aim of improvement through art. The building itself is a glorious example of Victorian architecture - check out the domed circular first gallery - and even the cafe's a wonderful setting!
But go here for the collection. One of the best Pre-Raphael collections in the world (particularly good on Burne-Jones) but with a more than respectable collection of other works. And great exhibitions - both in the main museum / gallery and in the adjoining Gas Hall.
If you like art don't miss this place.

“A good time sink.”
Reviewed January 11, 2014

It could just be my experience but the BMAG isn't really up to much these days. The exhibits are tired and the staff seem a little depressed. Could just be a January thing.

“Well worth a visit.”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

A good museum, and since I was new to Birmingham, the exhibition on the history of the city was informative. Unlike some other places, this was almost an Art Gallery with a museum rather than the other way round.
The signage for directions etc was not brilliant. I didn't want to pay £1 for a map of the museum, but probably needed it as the signage isn't that helpful.
The Edwardian tea rooms are defo worth going to for a break !

Reviewed January 8, 2014

Visited the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in Birmingham WM UK a place packed with Art works and Artifacts. The exhibitions are always changing. there is a section on the Staffordshire hoard well worth visiting. There is the Victorian tea rooms that is decorated with some spectacular works of art. It takes some time to cover all the areas so well worth a second visit.
