“Pen Museum”

Great little museum, and well worth a visit. Lots of interesting things to see and the chance to produce your own pen nib and to try and write with a quill. Very interesting tour and knowledgable tour guide, excellent video to watch at the end showing people who used to work at producing pens.

“Fascinating little museum”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Do the guided walk of the Jewellery Quarter and take in this & the Jewellery Q museum. This is small but really interesting (you may have seen it on Portillo's Railway Journeys).
The only depressing thing was reflecting on how much stuff used to be made in Birmingham (and the wider UK) and how little nowadays.

“Pen this in to your itinerary!!”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Birmingham's role in providing millions of nibs to the world is not perhaps as well known as it ought to be. Do find the time to locate this museum. Take the kids and show them what piecework and graft was in that age. School desks of yesteryear and very friendly and helpful staff. Run on voluntary contributions so please give when you have been to keep this place alive.

“If you thought pens were boring, try this!”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Stumbled upon this fascinating little FREE museum on a trip to the Jewellery Quarter with a group of friends. The exterior of the building is huge and imposing in the Italianate style, incorporating decorative brickwork of different colours. Inside is a wealth of material, well displayed and with knowledgeable and dedicated staff to show you round.
The stages in the process of making a 'dip' pen nib, were carefully demonstrated on a series of machines. Some of our group were allowed to pull the levers to cut or shape the nib. We were staggered to hear the number of nibs each worker (female, they were cheaper to employ!) would have to process each day. This was back in the pre-biro days, when Birmingham produced over 80% of the worlds pen nibs. And the different styles! Several were available in the second room to try out.
Other exhibits included ancient typewriters, a braille machine, an early telephone switchboard and some beautiful fountain pens, to name but a few.
It's all run by a charity and welcomes donations.

“Astonishing”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

I was on my way to Jewellry Quarter, and a lady on the door assumed i intended to visit the Museum.
Inside people were gentle, extremely available to show and explain the exposition .
More pens of all ages, types that i've never imagined, allways having an history behind.
It's free and on the way out, i was invited to fill the guest book.
A " must see "
