“New Ballet 'Aladdin'; excellent sets, costumes and technical expertise but where was the magic on 20 February 2013?”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

We travelled from Swindon, and stayed overnight, to see the new ballet, Aladdin, at the Birmingham Hippodrome, the home of the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

The sets, costumes, lighting and effects were a credit to the brilliant talent and expertise behind them but the cool draught across the middle circle, where we had seats centre stage in Row D, made for a rather uncomfortable two and a half hours although the bitterly cold weather had been forecast and a little more heat might have been an improvement.

The corps be ballet, soloists and other roles were, as expected, superb and engaging in their execution and expression but, alas, the role of Aladdin itself, and the lack of 'choregraphy' for that role, did not provide Chi Cao with the opportunity to show his skills and talent as a Principal Ballet Dancer, albeit in the character of an 'innocent boy', and, frankly, there seemed to be little or no chemistry between he and Natasha Oughtred as the Princess. Almost at the very end of the Ballet we saw a fleeting glimpse of the true talent and ability of Chi Cao.

This lack of chemistry, and magic, turned what could have been an excellent visit to the Ballet into a rather disappointing experience for us.

“Excellent facilities”
Reviewed February 21, 2013

Went to see the ballet and it is such a lovely stage - large enough to do a full ballet.
We saw Aladdin with BRB - a new show - but I am sure it will be around for a long time.
Orchestra and scenery were fabulous
It must have been a full house but there are plenty of bars and toilets so it was not a problem

“Good show, Inside Shame about location”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

Definitely a great place to see live performance, but it is a shame that it is in a club area, where people get drunk, abusive and show lack of respect to elder people.

“Birthday ruined by hecklers”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

Went to watch they very well reviewed Dirty Dancing on the 11th August. It was a reasonable show but nothing to right home about, but the evening was completely ruined by the constant heckling of women who had obviously been drinking for most of the afternoon. It was like going to a working men's club. The ushers interjected regularly but it continued for the whole performance. My wife did write to the theatre but was not even afforded the courtesy of a reply.

We will thing twice about using the venue again.
