“Slowest service in recorded history.”

Absolutely tragic lunch experience. I visted Turner's with a colleague during our Half-Term. We are both foodies and had heard the name "Turner's" mentioned alongside the likes of Purnell's and Simpson's. Due to the restaurant's Michelin Star (surely soon to be revoked) we were distinctly underprepared for the baffling levels of incompetence that followed. A long story short: our lunchtime trip lasted three and a quarter hours! We had three courses. We arrived at 12.45pm and left at 4.00pm. By the end of the meal, we decied to laugh about the farcical nature of our experience rather than grumble about it. Turner's is only saved from a one star review by the, it must be said, exceptional amuse bouche and pre-dessert, alongside an apologetic and professional maitre'd. Generally the food was good, but sometimes lacking in execution and finesse. For example, the blackcurrant souffle was swimming in butter at the bottom of the ramikin. I took little pelasure from pouring the butter on to my side plate as a means of minimising the risk of a coronary. There is something extremely wrong that Turner's (because of its underdeserved Star) is mentioned in the same breath as Purnell's. If you want a true Michelin Star experience, Purnell's excells in both servuce and execution. Turner's flounders around in the pool of abject mediocrity and staggeringly bad service. Alas, we will not be returning.

“Standards slipping?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 13, 2013

We have been to Turners a few times and have always been amazed by the quality of the food, service and the ambience, even though it's in a rather uninspiring part of Harborne.

This time, however, we were disappointed and will probably not go again. It is not cheap - although we have paid more in other restaurants - and we expect high quality and attention to detail. In fact, it has often been the attention to detail that has set Turners apart - the fantastic "amuse bouche" and other bonuses that adorn the excellent main courses! Much of what we were served during our recent visit was still good but it was not outstanding. We were a bit disappointed by the limited choice on the menu and some of our party were less than happy about pink meat on the chicken. The main issue, however, was that the main course was served onto cold plates and the food quickly became lukewarm and then cold.

On this occasion the ambience was a little lacking - other than our party, there were only two other diners. That cannot be helped, although we would expect more on a Thursday evening.
The service did reach its usual high standard and we would not criticise that at all.

I am afraid that the quality of the food served was not good enough! We suspected that the principal chef/patron was not on the premises. We cannot believe that Richard Turner would allow his hot food to be served on cold plates! We are happy to pay the prices charged by Turners - provided that standards are maintained. We shall be very hesitant to book again if there is any chance of our experience being repeated.

“Michelin Star in Harborne”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Visited with friends for lunch. From the moment we arrived the attention to detail and the attentive, but unfussy waiter service, coupled with delicious food made for a memorable occasion. We enjoyed the "simple" menu, which entailed a limited choice, accompanied with a glass of sommelier recommended wine with each course. We enjoyed four small, but filling courses imaginatively cooked by Mr Turner (1 * michelin chef) . Overall, a place for the special occasion - not cheap, but worth every penny !

“Excellent food in a relaxed and friendly setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Having previously visited nearby Purnells and Simpsons, I believe Turners tops my list. The food and wine were excellent. The service was attentive but not too fussy. Being relatively small, there is a realy irelaxing ambiance. Just goes to show that location and external appearance are not always good indications of the treasure that is inside!
