Neighborhood: Ladywood
Description: OK, so the name's hardly original but there's nothing else quite like Pad Thai in Birmingham. Step downstairs by the Cathay at Holloway Head and you enter a den of unforgettable fun. Here you can eat, drink and sing all in one stylish space, inspired by traditional Thai homes. At 6pm, the doors open and folk from across the West Midlands sit down (typically) for a green curry or pad thai, though there are over 140 dishes. Come 10:30pm, waitresses hand out mics, the big screen flickers into life and Pad Thai transforms into a karaoke lounge where Purple Rain, New York, New York and co. are crooned well into the early hours. Brilliant.

Booked in the private booth and there were 10 of us celebrating my birthday. Really had a great birthday celebration! Will recommend to my friends.

“Absolutely DREADFUL”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

We went with a group of people to see in the new year. The Karaoke booth had been booked weeks in advance by the organiser of our night out, and it was booked with the specific intent of seeing in the new year as a group of friends, so it was booked until 1am new years day.

I won't repeat all of the downsides listed in previous reviews, but suffice to say they're very accurate. Outdated equipment, poor to average food, indifferent (and sometimes rude) staff, and the toilets were absolutely filthy.

The worst part though was when we were told that we'd have to vacate our booth by 11:30pm as they "were busy" and had taken another booking for our booth. When we protested and explained that the booth had been booked with the specific intention of seeing in the new year we were met with a shrug of the shoulders and an indifferent vacant look. We were then told that we could return on Friday if we wanted to stay later (sorry, I don't think the rest of the world will move new years eve to Friday).

Eventually the "waiter" returned and told us that he had "excellent news." He'd spoken with the manager and we could stay in our booth until 5 minutes past midnight ....... WOW ....... thanks.

We didn't take up that offer and left at 11:20pm to try and find somewhere else in the city to see in the new year as a group of friends. Thankfully we managed to do so.

We refused to pay the service charge and they reluctantly accepted that.

If you're thinking of going ...................... DON'T ...................... Avoid this [--] at all costs.

“Don't waste your time or money!”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

My son and daughter recently moved to Birmingham and actually live close to this restaurant. We decided to go eat there last night and were very troubled by several things. You approach the restaurant and go down a flight of stairs to a basement area with no windows and rather darkly light. There were picnic bench seating with a bar area for waitstaff and some type of Thai stage for entertainment. It was a Saturday night and there was only one table eating at 8 pm which should have been a tell all?
Unfortunately when looking over the menu we ran across an option on the menu that contained SHARK FIN which is not only considered illegal in most parts of the world but is also a cruel and deadly way to maim a sea animal. For those who do not know, the shark 's fin is severed off the shark and then he is thrown back into the sea to drown. To serve Something like this when it is considered a barbaric practice is appalling in this day and age.
Because my daughter is an oceanographer, she was so upset to see this item on the menu that we ended up leavingbeforeordering. We will not be going back!
For those who want a wonderful THAI meal, may I suggest KINNAREE right by the Mailbox on the canal (22 Water Front) instead of Pad Thai? The food is fabulous, prices are great and the waitstaff cannot do enough for you. Our family has eaten there several times and it checks all of the boxes for a wonderful dining experience at a Thai restaurant!

“Crap”
Reviewed December 27, 2012 via mobile

A friend booked this for our works do. I'd read the reviews so I knew what I was getting into! As expected the food was pretty dire. The drink ordering system is a little ropey. Drinks expensive. Staff seem to be oblivious to customers needs. The " music" machine was outdated and worked as and when. Thankfully the friends that I went with outweighed the negatives that this place has. Get drunk before you go and I'm sure you'll like it!!! Thank heavens for a good crowd.

“Don't bother”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

I've eaten at Thai restaurants before and this just seemed to be Chinese food to an average standard. We were given a private room for 15 of us which was far too small, we complained about this and were moved to a larger room, larger it was but cold and dark, all staff speak poor English, we ask for a coke for a child and got a glass of wine.
Karaoke machine in Chinese and trying to communicate with staff on how to use it isn't easy.

Toilets are more like a nightclub on a Friday night than a restaurant.

Price was £30 per head, rip off

Never written a review before, just didn't want anyone to be as disappoint as we were.
