We wanted to do a city break in Birmingham for the Christmas market but were faced with the normal dilemma when it came to hotel accommodation. We have a daughter in her mid-teens and our days of all sharing one bedroom in a hotel are behind us. Hotels in the UK offer two options for us; two rooms or a slightly larger single room. Neither are ideal as one represents an expensive option with fewer hotels doing adjoining rooms, the second option is a just a non-starter now.
The Rotunda is great alternative and I must say I was surprised about how good the place actually was.
We had a room on the 18th floor which immediately had the wow factor with great views over Birmingham and beyond. After experiencing the shopping scrums it was lovely to look down below and see the masses walking through the Christmas market whilst we were comfortable in our apartment. There was no noise from the city below so the apartment had a lovely escape feel.
The accommodation consisted of a very spacious lounge / kitchen area. Two very nice (not massive) double bedroom both with ensuite and an entrance hall. All the equipment was very modern and there was certainly no shortage of technology. TV with Sky, an iMac (mini), juicer (with some oranges), espresso machine, fridge, freezer, etc etc in fact everything you would want if you were a resident let alone an overnight guest.
The décor was modern and the overall styling of the apartment was excellent. Maybe not my taste for 365 days a year but I can do "cool" once in a while. The only gripe I have, and this is a difference between 4 and 5, is that some of the furnishings are getting tired. The carpet is certainly beyond its best and this is obvious when you close the doors and see the original colour and condition.
As we had done enough shopping for a while and wanted some quiet time we decided that we would go to the Chinese quarter (a short walk away) and get a takeaway. This was another great advantage of an apartment. Usually after a busy day you would have to do a busy night if you were in a hotel. This way we could go for a nice walk. Chose a decent restaurant (thanks Trip Advisor) and return back for a feast with our feet up. Perfect.
I'm sorry Birmingham it is a difficult pitch for any destination that says "ideal for the Bull Ring" but you should not be put off. The Bull Ring area is now very good, even for someone who would not count shopping as an ideal day out. Just find a nice quiet place like we did.
