Wroxall Abbey Hotel & Estate
Ranked #8 of 12 Hotels in Warwick
Reviewed May 24, 2010

My wife and I were married yesterday at Wroxall Abbey. We couldn't have wished for a more lovely experience.

We were helped by remarkably sunny weather and hilariously entertaining wedding guests, but the venue itself was magical - a classically sprawling mansion house as a hotel, moments away from a petite, yet stunning chapel (now a cathedral), all set in beautiful, lush green surroundings. The 'sunken garden' itself is perfect for attractive photos.

Joy, our wedding co-ordinator, was really good in the build-up to the wedding, and unflappably excellent on the day. Any problems on our side, such as flaky external caterers, were handled with aplomb. She was a credit to Wroxall Abbey Estate.

The set-up is absolutely perfect for a wedding. The church is one minute's walk away from the hotel entrance, and less than a minute's walk from the marquee.

In the lead up to the wedding, me and the missus ate a few times at Wroxall and, to be honest, weren't overwhelmingly impressed by its hit and miss nature. On the day of the wedding however, the barbeque menu that was chosen was brilliant (the sausages seemed to be the most popular item). Again, the gorgeous weather helped, but there's no doubt it was a well-received wedding breakfast.

No real issues with the service: Stuart, the duty manager, was friendly and reliable, and the younger staff around the hotel were cheerful and attentive. Some of the older staff were a little eccentric but, again, it sort-of fit with the whole vibe.

The bridal suite was great - exposed wooden beams, acres of space and an enormous jacuzzi bath worth spending a lot of time in. Other guests all seemed happy with their rooms too, all very different from the next, in a kind-of 'shabby chic' way.

There were some issues that, if ironed out, would make Wroxall the only venue to consider for a wedding. The menu for the wedding breakfast, for example, wasn't exactly as specified by ourselves prior to the event.

There seemed to be some difficulty in getting all our stuff required for the marquee (where the wedding breakfast/evening reception was held) there at the same time, which did regrettably lead to a last-minute juggling of the schedule; in mitigation, much of this material was brought in piecemeal fashion to the venue in the days leading up to the wedding, and staff were very helpful in accomodating this. It did seem as if some of the bottles of wine ordered for the wedding breakfast were being held back, but it wasn't made immediately clear why - we would have preferred glasses being topped up at the appropriate times rather than just being left to pour our own and be left with nothing when the wine ran out.

Also, the marquee was an extremely warm place to be on an unusually hot Spring day. Judging by some of the other comments, when it's hot it's really hot and when it's cold...

And, finally, I would imagine that if you're a guest at the hotel and there's a wedding on, it isn't the best place to be for getting drinks, food etc - there was a wedding the previous day, that caused a bit of awkwardness for our guests that had arrived the day before the wedding

Overall though, my wife and I were absolutely delighted with our choice of venue. Our guests seemed almost more delighted than ourselves! It's a tad rough around the edges, but cannot be faulted for its charm, its character or its staff. It is a wonderful wedding venue and was perfect for our special day.

P.S. Some of the reviews suggested Wroxall Abbey was haunted: one of our guests did claim to have seen a ghost too! That said, she was pretty drunk.

We were visiting the NEC, and decided to stay out of Birmingham and we are so glad we did.

Wroxall Abbey Estate was perfect, lovely setting, close to some great villages and only a short drive from all the facilities of Solihull and Birmingham.

What really made the stay special was the staff, particularly Bibiana and Ellie who were superb and a real credit to the hotel. We were a little disappointed with our first room (it was fine, but we were hoping for something a little special) and I mentioned this to Bibiana and Ellie. They made no fuss and 10 minutes later we were offered two different rooms, both brilliant. We stayed two nights and they seemed genuinely keen to assist us and were very helpful in recommending places to eat etc. The Lloyds Curry house in Knowle was a great suggestion!

All is all the hotel is only 3 star and it is worthy of this, but for us - what made this stay 5 star - was the staff, especially Bibiana and Ellie.

Recently stayed at this hotel for a friend's wedding and the setting of the hotel is great, right in the middle of the countryside with beautiful scenery. This is an old historic building so do not expect modernity as the rooms are old and the decor is probably not to everyone's taste. The wedding was well organised and we enjoyed the day. Drinks were quite cheap but the food was pretty average. I didn't see the spa / pool area so can't comment. Hardly saw the staff... they seemed okay, they told us before we arrived that we couldn't check in before 3pm but when we got there at 12.30pm they let us have the room as it wasn't particularly busy. It's quite expensive to stay here so it was lucky we got a discount due to the wedding.

Stayed here with work on 10th Dec and had our xmas party. The hotel was just so friendly - the staff were lovely and bent over backwards to help us. When some of my colleagues hadn't made it up in time for breakfast the staff arranged bacon sandwiches for them to be put in our meeting room with fruit. Quality of xmas meal was excellent. The barman David was excellent. My room was clean, pleasant with all facilities required. Furniture in all parts fit in very nicely. Would definitley recommend.

We travelled to the midlands for a family wedding. Wroxall Abbey Estate was the perfect location with the wedding ceremony taking place in the estates very own chapel. Every event was faultless and well organised by attentive efficient staff. The food was first class, and we were particullary impressed by breakfast which provided adequate oportunity to relax and chat in elegant surroundings. Being November we were pretty much an indoor crowd but with acres of landscaped historical gardens to explore I am sure there are more suprises to uncover. With regard to the room, although comfortable and spacious we had problems getting in !!!! The door is operated by keycard, and we went through six during our stay, there is obviously a fault with the system. Not a major problem, but it was inconvenient. In summary, an impressive place to stay, and an excellent wedding venue. As for the unexpected it is reputed to be haunted. Room 48 we are informed could yield a suprise. There are cellars/vaults also to explore.

Stayed at Wroxall five times now - absolutely fabulous. all of the rooms in the Mansion ar different which is such a refreshing change from so many hotels. Old fashioned country house hotel, amazing staff who are friendly, courteous & efficient. The restaurant is excellent with a good value for money wine list. The only minor criticism is that the Friday evening 3 course dinner is prepared t a budget rather than the excellent quality of the a la carte menu. If you like good old fashioned service in a superb setting go to Wroxall.
